| Post-Anaphalctic Shock Thursday I took my 4 1/2 month yorkie to the vet and got vaccinated with lepto and DAPP. On the way home he vomited and when we arrived home we notice he was very confused and he kept squinting his eyes and wouldn't stop whimpering. He was also salivating non stop. I took him to the hospital and they gave him a steroid injection due to anaphalactic shock. All day friday he has been very sleepy and not eating much. does anyone know how long he will be like this... Its breaking my heart and trust me I learned my lesson I will not be giving him the lepto booster as now i have read that it causes this reaction. I have been spoling him and letting him rest but is there anything else i can do to help him? |

| Unfortunately that's very common in Yorkies. Was the lepto part of a combo shot or did the vet give it separately? This happened to Ellie (she threw up, collapsed and went into shock...unresponsive pretty much). After a steroid and Benadryl injection, she was just very tired. The next day she was normal/almost normal. Dogs can be elthargic and not have an appetite from this vaccine anyway for a couple days, so you probably have nothing to worry about. On the other hand, if there is vomiting, diarrhea or if his gums are anything but a nice pink, he probably needs to see the vet again. How are his gums looking?

| Just remember that the first time a dog has this vaccine, they aren't as likely to react because their body has never "seen" it before. Now reactions will be more likely and since there was already a serious one, while I wouldn't want to tell someone not to give it, I absolutely would not.

| Hello... I am new to posting information on the site..Please bare with me if I posted the information in the incorrect area. My yorkie went to the vet on Monday 8/10/09 and rec'd the distemper (DAP), Lepotosipirosis (4-way vaccine) and the lyme disease vaccine. While on the way home she vomitted then when we got home she just laid down. After a couple of hours she started scratching alot, breathing hard and broke out in hives. I took her back to the vet they stated she had an allegric reaction to the shot and gave her a shot like benadryl (from here on out the vet wants to pre medicate her before her shots...is there anything I can do at home before she goes to the vet to get her shots????).. It has been three days and she is not up to her normal self...Although she is eating and drinking water but not playful and only wants to sleep. Should I take her back to the vet? Please help what can I do...I feel sorry for her... |

| My vet will not give my Yorkie the Lepto part of the vaccine. It can be left off. He said Yorkie's should not have the Lepto vaccine. I guess it is not required in Texas? |

| I refuse to give either of mine a lepto shot. If your dog had a reaction to it...I wouldn't ever give it again. |

| I would not want to get another lepto shot as the reaction can be much worse with succesive shots. I know some vets think this shot is necessary but I have not given it in 20 years and have never had a problem |

My furkids Donating Member | My vet doesn't give lepto to small breeds either. I always have titers done but, if they do need a shot I always tell them to leave out the lepto (even though they do anyway)

| Skip the Lepto booster. It is not a core vaccine and it is not necessary. My vet won't give small dogs the Lepto vaccine due to so many serious reactions.

Dont give her the Lepto shot again. That is what caused this. My vet gave me Benadryl to give him 30 min prior to his vaccines but my puppy might need a steriod shot along with his vacinnes from now on. | |
