| Please help!!!! Izzy has been at the vet for the past 3 days. On Thursday when I took her in, it was for throwing up and some loose stools. The vet did a parvo test which was negative. She treated her for an intestinal infection. On Friday AM, I noticed she couldn't walk. She would just fall over. So I immediately took her back to the vet. Her blood sugar level had dropped to 55. They cathed her and administered fluids. Then the vet called me and said she had a pure black stool indicating bleeding in her intestine. Asked if there was a chance she has eaten something she shouldn't have. I have only had her a week and it's a controlled environment. So I don't know. She gave her a vitamin K shot and sent me home with some cemetidine (sp?). She stayed with the vet the entire day. She sent Izzy home that night with the cath still in just in case it had to be used again. I got up and syringe fed her every few hours and gave her nutrical. On Saturday AM, DH took her back to have cath removed. The vet wanted her to stay for the day for observation. They also sent home a special food for her to eat until she feels better. I brought her home and she seemed to do really well last night. Later last night I found small spots of red blood on her potty pad that came from her bottom. Her poo is brown again. This morning she was bright and perky......a few hours later, she is just laying around. I fed her and gave her some more nutrical and watched her drink some water. She just wants to sleep and it's really worrying me. Does anyone think that there is something else going on with her??? Should I take her to get a 2nd opinion somewhere else??? I really don't know what to do and I am panicking. Her little body is such a mess from cath insertion, nutrical, food, and anything else......What happened to my barking, jumping, running, playful puppy??????

| Did the vet check her for worms, I am sure they probably did. Other than the nutracal for sugar drops, I don't know what else to do. How much nutracal are you giving her and are you only giving it to her when she gets lifeless ony you? She should have a fingertip of it and you can give it up to about three times a day spaced out of course and it is something you don't want to do a regular basis after she gets back to herself. The black tarry stool from the bleeding is what is throwing me off. Whip worms cause bright red bleeding but the black is old blood. What color are her gums? Are they pale? i can think of a million things but not with the bloody stool since the parvo test came back negative. there is a new strain going around that is hard to diagnos and hard to treat. Did they check her for gairdia? has she been drinking any standing water like rainwater or anything? Liver shnt doesn;t present with old blood that I know of. Trying to contact Dr. Tobias at Uof T is a good idea. You need to do something now. Last edited by Sugar's Mom; 07-26-2009 at 06:12 AM. |

| Being that she is only 8 weeks, she is probably really tiny, and she can go down hills fast. TJ was 13 weeks when I brought him home, and within a week he started to have these gel poop episodes. He tummy would make crazy noises too. I was at the Vet like every 3 days. I don't know what is wrong with your baby, but don't be afraid to go back to the Vet or find a new one I bought Children's Pedialite and I would force with a syringe that to TJ to make sure he stayed hydrated. |

| She hasn't drank any rain water or standing water from outside. I don't take her outside as the vet has recommended her not being outside on the ground until after ALL of her shots were complete. So She's been inside. They gave me cemetidine for the ulcers....I have to pick up a vitamin K prescription tomorrow that is supposed to be given orally. I forgot to add that on Saturday, the vet gave her another vitamin K shot. I give her nutrical during the day. She is drinking a lot of water now which is good I think???? I know she prefers her own food compared to the one they sent home with us.

| did they do a blood panel? was anything off on the blood panel with the white or red blood cell count? was the dog given any nsaids like rimadyl, metacam, etc as those can affect the lining of stomach and cause an ulcer yellow jelly poops with red blood is colitis and from large intestines but black tarry stools is from small intestines and can be more serious - when dd was so sick from one dose of metacam they kept asking if she was having black tarry stools or coffee grounds in her poop. They were trying to see if it was an ulcer what happened within the 24 hrs of all this happening? |

For the bleeding for her intestine they gave Cimetidine Susp 0.05ML every 12 hours. They also sent home Royal Canin Recovery RS food home. We do not have any rat/mouse poisions...She stays in her play yard or when she is out, it's in a controlled environment. She can't just roam the house. I don't have ANY plants onor has anyone given her anything.

| yeah do not think this is liver shunt but do think it is small intestinal ulcer and concerned how she got this as i know nsaids can cause this but if she did not get rimdayl or metacam concerned what could have triggered it -- what are you cleaning with at home? |
