Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i'd leave him overnight so he can get more care. he just had major orthopedic surgery and if he's in a lot of pain they will be able to take care of it. The ex-pen should be fine. however if he is a jumper or a bouncer while in there you should probably get a crate because its smaller and will confine his movements more. He'll need to go outside a few times a day for potty breaks. this is ok and will let him use his leg a little bit. 5 minutes a few times a day is good for the leg. the joint needs to be able to move alittle.

| We just got back from our visit and it was horrifying for us. Riked looked so out of it and was just whimpering the whole time but gave me a few kisses on my hands and face. Even though, he's super attached to Shawn (bf) he really didn't acknowledge him. It was strange, as if he was upset that Shawn took him there in the first place. Just as Kalina suspected, he has to stay overnight again. His glucose levels are down and he vomited a few hours ago. I'm praying tonight that his levels come back up and he'll be ready to go in the morning. We got an exercise pen made of mesh/plastic that looks more like a playpen, along with lots of bedding. I was afraid if we got one of the metal ones that he'd try to climb out of it. Will update when I hear from the surgery team in the morning.

| I'm glad to hear the surgery went well!! Kaia will be so happy to see him! I hope he's well enough to come home soon.

Kalina82 is right.. He will need to exercise that leg a little for bone to grow and heal. Bone will not repair itself without "some" use. | |

| Riker is home and is whimpering and whining. We have some pain meds and antibiotics that we have to administer daily. He has no cast, just a little bandage over the incision of his elbow. He also has a pretty big e-collar which seems a little awkward for him. His little set up in the ex pen is great but he hates confinement so much that he starts howling and crying. Not sure what to do...I don't want to have him injure himself trying to get out. We put him in his little cushioned bed next to us but I know it's not a long-term solution. We'll try to start putting him back in there for small increments and then increase the time maybe. Thanks again for the support. The surgeon looks like he did amazing, the incision is only about an inch long.

| poor baby. i am glad the surgery went well. i know it's just about impossible, and i am not sure what to recommend, but he must stay still as much as possible while he heals i think. you wouldn't want to risk him getting injured again!!!! maybe you can take him out in your purse? carrying case? just walk around if he will stay still in there. (you might consider getting a stroller for him so you can go outside with him, so he can sniff the air and not be so bored) Quote:

I'd be extremely careful with him out of the confinement pen. he should be on a leash and harness at all times when he is out. NOT on the bed, couch or any other type of furniture. Honestly he needs to be in that pen so your going to have to put him in there even tho he is crying. You can give him benedryl to make him drowsy. its 1mg per pound every 8 hours. Call your vet to make sure its ok. If he's too active in the pen then you need to get him a smaller crate. its for the best. it only takes one second for him to reinjure that leg when your back is turned and he's out of the crate and not on the floor. i've seen it way to many times.

| It took a little bit of imagination of what to do with him as far as the pen situation. My boyfriend, Kaia and I all sat inside with Riker until he felt comfy. I warmed up his little cuddle pad and sure enough, he slept well. He hasn't really moved around much and he's sleeping soundly now. I think it was just very exciting and scary for him but he seems to be okay now. Here's some day one pictures of our baby. My boyfriend is sleeping now, so that he can come down and stay with him all night. We're just going on shifts for the first couple of days. Does anyone know if a baby onesie would be better than the collar? He seems to trip over the collar when he goes to get some water or move a little. Thank you all so much for the support, it really helped me throughout this terrifying experience!

As far as a onesie, I might ask the vet. Addie got spayed and I tried onesies but she kept squirming and I got concerned. I called the vet and got the exact same collar you have for your pup and I was told my vet doesn't recommend onesies. He said it's best not to have anything covering the sutured area. Mine trips over her cone thing a little sometimes, too. I kind of puff it up into a cone shape so it's not down. This way she's still not able to reach the sutures and she's less likely to trip on it. But your pup's injury and my pup's spay are completely different and located in different places. So I would ask the vet.
