| Fast breathing Diamond had a litter of 4 pups last Tuesday morning. For the last couple days I've noticed that she's been breathing fast and panting while she's nursing and even while she sleeps or rests. At times it will slow down but not what I've known to be normal for her. Is this normal for a mom with a new litter? I've not been through this before to know.

| I think it is normal. Mine did it for several days after. I just made sure she got plenty to eat along with replacememnt milk, calcium supplement from the vet and cottage cheese. She stopped after several days. You just need to watch her carefully for eclampsia.

| She was checked out and he said she looked good and was fine. He felt everything was okay, we were there initially because she was carrying 5 pups and I never saw her deliver the 5th one. What does the oxy shot do?

| Helps to clean her out of all placentas and anything else that might still be left over. Have you taken her temp?

| Her temp is normal. She may be hot.. What have you got her in and how are you keeping the babies warm? They can pant for a few days after whelp.. keep an eye on her make sure she drinks lots of water and feed her well. |

| She's in a box lined with clean towels. She moves the towels around however she wants them but the ones in the bottom stays there all the time. There's just a few extra ones to help keep the babies warm. The front of the box is open on top and halfway down the front but I have a towel clothespinned over the top to keep out any drafts. I just take it off when I change the towels out or to check on everybody. Most of the time she stays curled up around the babies. My home is not that cool (trying to save on ac until it gets really warm) but still comfortable I believe, not too warm. They have all been in her fleece dogbed a couple of times also but when that happens the puppies don't stay right up under her all the time. They will lay away from her more and snuggle against the sides when they sleep. I guess because it's so soft but she pants regardless of where she is. At least her temp is normal so that's good.

| I kept a heating pad under the whelping box set on low. The pups would always lay on the warm spot. Make sure you keep mom clean and fed well. She needs to be eating lots so that she can produce milk. Make sure her teets are nice and full but not hard red and lumpy. Just like human moms they can get clogged milk ducts and this can lead to infection and fever. I would apply a warm compress and massage the teet to help the clog run thru. You can use a washcloth with warm water. Good Luck to you and your family.. |

| Thanks, she's doing better today. Now my problem is with her sister Emerald. She wants to stay in the box with the pups and I even caught her nursing the pups this afternoon. Their mom was letting her so I guess I need to separate Emerald from all the rest of them while I'm gone. I'm not sure what to do about all that!!

| My Lexie has been panting a lot when she nurses, so she is also getting a calcium supplement and the vet has me adding cottage cheese to her kibble; however, the diarrhea has just been terrible. I have to give her a backside bath about 5 times a day so the puppies don't get sick from laying on her backside. |

| I Agree ... Keep an eye on her to make sure she will not develop a fever... my vet does not abuse of the OXI but it may be a good idea... it gets them cleaned up faster ... Is she drinking normally ? Hopefully it is all over already and congrats on the litter ! Enjoy them !!!!!
