| Liver shunt or MVD? Hello all- We just had our tiny Willow (2.5 pounds) BAT tested and it came back pre-19 post-45. The reason I had her tested is because I was concerned that she might have a shunt. she has had one mild seizure, this was almost a year ago. We rushed her to the ER and the ER vet that saw her that night also thought it could have maybe been due to a head trauma, since we didn't see the seizure start, we just found her seizing. She had been excitedly barking and running to the front door to greet my husband and then next thing I heard was him freaking out that somehting was wrong with Willow. The seizure also coincided on a day we had given her some comfortis for fleas, for the first time ever (we have never given it to her since), so this was also suspect. Well, I finally decided to go ahead and get her BAT tested since she is due to have LP surgery soon, and I wanted to make sure she wasn't liver compromised since she did have the one seizure, and the high levels came back. I had a unrinalyses and protein C done on her today and they both came back with normal results (I get the print out when I go pick her up in an hour). She is fairly asymptomatic, although she has always done excited circling. She has only had the one seizure about a year ago and other than that, has absolutely no shunt symptoms. We are going to take her to see a specialist that our vet is referring us to, but my quesiton is, what do you guys think it is? Do you think I am looking at MVD or a small shunt? Is an U/S the next step? I am wondering if it would be possible to have a liver biopsy done while she is under for her LP, so she doesn't have to go through any extra anesthesia.... I currently have her on candidae, but am going to get her on Royal Canin Ls 14, is there any treats I can giver her? Thanks for any wisdom you can depart. Erin |

| Thanks for the details. The young age, small size, and the comfortis than seizure is something to think about...hmmmm.... I am surprised that you got results back so soon The Protein C test MUST be sent to Cornell University (via over night delivery) and usually don't get results until at least a week later And the Protein C test comes back as a % Under 70% leans towards LS Above 70% leans towards MVD Roxy also needs to have one leg repaired from her first LP surgery that is luxating again, but I would never have them do a biopsy at the same time, too much going on, longer under the anthethsia, etc... |

| It is most likely MVD or something altogether different. the only way to rule out shunt with any certainly is with scintography which doesn't sound necessary right now. Since bile acids can be up with any liver functioning problem, there could be something else going on. Had you given her any drugs the week before the BAT? Never any bladder issues, UTIs, picky eating, lethargy, excessive thirst? In case it is MVD, the vet does need to be very careful with anesthesia and pain meds. A biopsy can be done during surgery but the best way to do it is invasive and does carry risk. Some vets would just rather skip it... How about redoing the BAT in a month?

I had read that (about Cornell) and when I asked the vet for the protein C test, I was surprised when she said they can do it in house. It's the protein/creatinine test, correct? She is going to give my husband the printout with the percentage, she just told me over the phone that it showed normal? I'll know more when I get the printout I guess.... Yeah, I had that concern about the surgery, being too much, I haven't gotten the chance to dicsuss it at length, we are waiting on the visit with the internist. Thank you for your response

Hi, thanks for you repsonse Nope, never ANY issues. She did get frontline (I only use about 1/4 of the tube) last Thursday, she had her BAT on the following Saturday, could that have affected it?

In any case, I would love to know the % I think that you need to speak with the Internal Medicine Specialist AND the Ortho Specialist at the same time - to discuss the best way to approach her upcoming LP surgery, possible liver biopsy and the precautions for her possible liver issues. My concern is she is ONLY 2.5 lbs and that's alot for her to have going on I know it can be done, but everything truly has to be double checked and YOU have to be 100% confident in BOTH of the Specialist.

...they say NOTHING can effect the results, BUT I don't buy that. I always give about 3 to 4 weeks time inbetween anything *funky* and the BAT.

From my understanding, Protein C testing can only be done through Cornell still.

| Hmm, Ellie's internist said they just don't know if certain things can affect it.

Well...I am wondering if the Frontline DID skew the result - IMO it could.

NYS Animal Health Diagnostic Center at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine I would get that done and redo the BAT and THEN I would see an Internist (armed with those results )
