| what does a small liver mean? I don't know if I'm in the right place to post this. But here goes, Chance had her blood work done on 3-5-09, her alt was 453, and her alp was 83, her bun was 12. My regular vet did the first test. But she said they were a little high, and bring her back in 2 months and retest Chance. But I felt like there was some wrong, Chance wasn't like herself. I truthfully felt like it was her Royal Canin, because with she first started acting different I started cooking stuff for her like rice, salmon, peas and I gave her apples and cheerios. She started acting like her old self. Then I gave her the Royal Canin again and she started not acting right again. That's why I decided to go to a different vet. He did another blood work on her and her alt was 409, and alp was 156 and her bun was 5 he said they were high, he did a x-ray and said her liver was small, I don't really know what this means about a small liver. But he thinks this all points toward a liver shunt. We have an appointment at UT tomorrow. My questions are what does a small liver mean, is UT a good hospital for liver shunts, how bad are liver shunts, does this mean she will die. Do I have to decide everything in one day? Please help me with some questions |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | It is not the Royal Canine, the brand, that is probably the issue with her acting differently when being fed that food...it's the protein content. Dogs with liver shunt can not process protein. Toxins build up in their bodies. Her bloodwork indicates she needs additional testing to rule out LS. I'm not sure why a vet would say her liver is "small"...however, many vets are not very familiar with shunts. UT is a wonderful...considered premier for LS and corrective surgery. They also provide the services for much less than found elsewhere in the country. Here's some more information.... Portosystemic Shunts FAQ The more quickly you get a diagnosis and treatment if necessary the bettter. Sending prayers for Chance.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I'm glad he acts like he feels okay. I'm not trying to worry you...but please don't let that stop you from pursuing the possibility of LS. Some dogs are asymptomatic for years...it's found "accidently" in bloodwork or they have a bad reaction to anesthesia or vaccinations. I will tell you...many dogs have surgery to correct shunts. They live long healthy lives afterward. He's in good hands at UT. People fly themselves and their pets specifically to be treated at this hospital.

| I am in agreement with Bchgirl, getting her diagnosed and into a great Hospital is the way to go. The sooner a diagnosis is made, the sooner a game plan can be formulated for her benefit. Best Wishes! |

| what is a small liver update, need your prayers please Chance went to UT today to have her tests done. She does have a liver shunt. They are going to let her come home tomorrow with medicine and a new diet. They are going to surgery on her in two weeks after all the changes. They were so wonderful there. Please all you Yorkietalkers please pray for her please. She does have a smaller liver because of the shunt. But it is suposed to regenerate and after her surgery. Thank you for your prayers. I have had signs from God all day. I would especially like to thank bchgirl for your reply, and Lil fu fu for her reply also. Thank you for all your prayers, I know God does great things. The doctor and student at UT were great, and so helpful they knew how much Chance means to me and my husband. There names are doctor Courtney W. Kleinhelter and the student was Michelle Woodward. They are great. We are hopeful that Dr. Tobias can do Chances surgery. Thanks for reading my post, sorry it is so long but I am scared about Chance and it is so hard to be home without her. |
