| Calling all owners of Liver Shunt babies I have a dilemma... Since adopting Trooper and doing some research and learning more about Liver Shunt, I'm a little confused and hesitant as to whether or not I should be giving him the normal annual vaccines and flea & heartworm meds. He had liver shunt surgery in July '08 and his vet and the surgeon both feel that he's a normal dog and can have his shots, but I also joined a Yahoo Group where they lived and learned through experience of having ls dogs and they say that giving a liver compromised dog those shots & meds are not good at all and can do more harm than anything. Before I adopted him the rescue group got all of his shots as per the vet/surgeon, except his rabies because apparently it would counteract something, so they said that he couldn't have that done until '09. I'm so torn... If I do and it makes him sick, I will feel horrible, but if I don't and he gets sick from some other disease or gets a parasite or something, I'll still feel horrible and like I didn't protect him... Has anyone been through this and what are your opinions?

| No dog should be given annual vaccines (reference would be AAHA and Dr. Dodds/Dr. Schultz). So the answer is no. However, Ellie is liver compromised and I would not do away with all of them. I would only do rabies if it is required in your area and your vet won't write a waiver. I would consider parvo, distemper and hepatitis but no more than every three years (unless titers go really low) and you might get away with no hepatitis at all. It would be better to do titers instead and he may not need anything. Some dogs have high titers for a life time after one modified live vaccines given after the immune system is fully mature. If a dog was very sick with liver disease, I would not vaccinate at all and I do think that the Yahoo Group has a good point about stopping all harsh meds like vaccines but then you may have to be very careful about him going outside and that could get old.

| I agree, We dont give our Children all these Vacs. I think alot of it is the drug companies tied in with some vets. I agree with the first year puppy shots but to over vac. will lower their immunity. They do need some vacs and in my area Heart worm pills are a must. |
