New Owner of a 7 week old yorkie I think he is sick Hello! I am new here and I bought my wife a 7 week old yorkie for V-day. He is 2 pounds 2 ounces and he looks and acts sick. He was born on 12/20. He will drink water and pee seconds later which I guess is good. He will not eat the food the breeder told us to feed him "small hard food" so we were told to put cottage cheese in with it and we have done that. No Dice. He will not touch his food. After he drinks water and then pees he will normally go to the corner and vomits. He walks a little but wants to be in a warm spot laying down for the most part. He sometimes shakes a little and cries. He looks like he is sick. I don't think he has eaten in at least 24 hours if not longer. I am worried about him and don't know what to do with him today but leave him alone. I just went and got pedialight for babys and will try that soon. I will take him to the vet tom but that does me no good today. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Brandon |
I by no means am an expert on puppies . . .but I think he needs to see the vet asap . . .most vets will have a 24 hour on call service . . .he might be sick because his sugar is low. Did you buy any nutrical? If you don't have that, you might want to try putting some syrup on your finger to see if he will take that . . .he needs to have something. Yorkies and other small breeds are commonly known to have low blood sugar! Also, 7 weeks old is really young to have been taken from his momma, way too young! Most yorkies do not leave their homes until at least 10 weeks of age . . . |
He is very young too young to be away from his mother. Young puppies can go down fast when they are sick they dont have the reserves of an older dog. You need to get him to an emergency vet asap |
Seven weeks is much too young for a baby to be away from its litter & Mom. He really must eat or he can have a hypoglycemic episode (low blood sugar) which can be dangerous, even deadly quickly. Get some food in that baby right away. It doesn't matter if it's the dog food or not. Try some small pieces of chicken or some thing like that. Also, if you don't have any Nutri-Cal, get some karo syrup (about 1 cc at a time) in him to keep his blood sugar up. If you don't have that, pancake syrup will do in a pinch. You really MUST get that baby to eat. |
Thanks you guys That is what we thought when we bought him. He was the last one left and they had already sold a whole liter last week. I don't want anything to happen to him so we are gonna try to call a vet NOW. We are gonna try the syrup now as well. Thank you so much. We bought him from a pet store. That is sad that there are selling them that fast just for the money!!! Any think else let us know. Thanks Branson |
If he is from a pet store he needs to be checked anyway. It is common for pet stores to sell sick pups |
humm He will not eat the syrup! We were just told to put sugar in some water and try that. He is drinking the sugar water. He would not even drink the ped light. |
Please let us know how you make out! Do you have any cold cut meat like turkey or chicken? Also, take a look at his gums . .if they are very pale that is a tell tale sign of him being hypoglycemic . . . I can't believe a pet store would be selling such a young baby . . that is horrible!:thumbdown  |
Even in a pup that was held until the recommended 12 weeks, the first couple days in a new home are critical. The pup must bond with the new owners and feel comfortable enough in its new home to eat. It's a shame that new owners aren't advised of such things. With these small babies, you can lose one quickly if they don't eat well after going to a new home. Watch for lethargy, unfocused eyes, wobbly stance and general limpness. These are all signs of a pup with low sugar. Yes, call the vet but get something in that baby. |
saturday purchase We bought him on sat and we have 3 days to get him checked out. We were gonna take him anyway tom but I am starting to think tom will be to late if he doesn't eat. He drank some of the sugar water and he hasn't vomited yet so we will see. |
Wishing you luck with your little one, :animal-pa |
You can put some syrup in a syringe (without the needle) and give it to him like that or just put it on your finger and give it to him that way. |
thanks You guys have been great! We are still trying to get ahold of a vet. He seemed to have an quick response to the sugar water. He will not take the syrup so I guess I will have to go out and find a syringe. We have now started force feeding him. He's not happy about it. |
If you have some canned food, sometimes they'll take that better but for now anything you can get in him is great. Most pups won't turn down meat either. Don't worry about spoiling him. He has to eat so do whatever you have to. |
When Brody was a puppy we used to have to mix wet puppy food with his dry food to get him to eat it . . .I also used to wet down his dry food with warm water to make it softer . . . Rhianna just eats anything . . .she never had food issues . . . |
7week old Just put some Kayro syrup on your finger and put it on his tongue, he has to eat, he is to small to have no nourishment. Is that pet store opened today? I would take him back to them. |
Just wanted to say that I hope everything goes well with your little guy! Please keep updating. |

I am curious, is it not illegal to sell a puppy so young in a pet store? |
We had to give our pup Karo syrup once. She was 13 weeks old and wouldn't eat. It was one week after getting her. She became very lethargic and shaky. We put the syrup on our finger and put it under her tounge. She was fine in minutes! We ground her kibble and put warm water on it to get her to eat. |
Welcome to YT! So sorry this new little one is so sick. You have had good advice. I'll pray for you all. Please update & let us know what the vet says too. Yes, he is too young to be away from his mother & litter mates - the bonding & nurturing that happens between 7-10 or 12 weeks is so important to these little ones. But you have him now - so make the best of it. I have mixed feelings about whether you should take him back to the petstore - not sure how well they would take care of him, but if there is a lot more wrong with him - I sure would hate for you to be stuck with that responsibility. |
feeling better already He is not shaking anymore and he seem a little more alert. Holding his head up better and not so shaky when he walks. We have force fed him a couple drops of the syrup by putting it under his tounge, he has had a teaspoon of chicken broth with puppy food "nuti source chicken and rice formula" and he is drinking some sugar water. I have called two vets and left messages so hopefully we will get someone to call us back. He is still whimpering but, he seems better as long as he is being held. Do you think we should try to get some puppy formula and a bottle or keep doing what we are doing until we can get him to the vet in the morning? |

I would keep offering him the wet food and hold him close to you i would not take him back to the pet store as he wont get the care there that he needs.Hopefully one of the vets you have been calling will get back to you soon. |
Puppy Cal is great also. I found it at Pet Smart. It has the corn syrup plus iron and other nutrients. |
Keep feeding him and giving him the sugar water . . .did you look at his gums? I'm just curious to see if they are pale or not . . . What was he like when you took him from the pet store? Was he acting normal or did he seem sick then too? Hoping a vet will call you back soon. |

Glad he is eating a little and less shakey. Do you have any 24 hour er vets in the area, they should be listed in the phone book. My Cali was like that when I got her and needed immediate vet care. I found the only thing she would eat was the canned Cesar's beef dog food from the grocery store. It is bad food but better than them not eating. Try warming the food a little too. I hope you can get him in today. Please keep us posted. |
It's good to hear that he's responding well. He probably doesn't need a milk substitute at his age but just make sure he continues to eat. Also, limit his playtime (once he starts to get active) to make sure he doesn't burn up all his reserves. It would be a good idea to get some Nutri-Cal and give him a dab a couple times a day for a while. Hopefully, someone will be home with him the next few days as he really shouldn't be left alone. He could go downhill on you quickly if he doesn't eat regularly. At this age, he should be eating 3-4 times daily. You can leave dry food out for him so he always has access to food but he really should be closely watched until you get over this hump with him. Best of luck. |
response His gums were a little pale but, not really. He wasn't real energetic when we got him but, we thought he was just scared. He was in the cage all by himself when we bought him. The lady at the pet store said that if he didn't eat right away to try putting cottage cheese in with his puppy food but, that didn't work and that is why we started this post. Thanks for all of your help. |
