I gave him 1/2 teaspoon of banana apple pear baby food mixed with cottage cheese and so far he has not thrown that up. He didn't seem to mind it that much. I've been giving him pedialite with a syringe also. He is just so little I'm not sure how much is enough and what is too much. The vet really didn't tell us that much. Thanks for all your help.

The size of your pinky nail 4 to 6 times a day....Maybe more times if you see him act shaky or lethargic.....

I agree, food is very important....

Maybe you should send a PM to one of the breeders here on YT - just thinking in case they haven't seen your thread. I used to raise Bichons - but I never had a puppy this sick, so I don't want to give you inaccurate information

yorkiesmiles 02-16-2009 06:51 PM

This is off of Dr. Foster's website

Dog Nutritional Supplements: Nutri-Cal for Puppies, Adult Dogs & Senior Dogs
Suggested daily use:
Puppy: To supplement your puppy's caloric or nutritional intake: 1/4 tsp per pound of body weight daily. When your puppy is not eating its full ration: 1/3 tsp per pound of body weight daily.

Do you know how much Buster weighs - this recommendation seems low to me given his current condition -- well, what exactly is his current condition?

busterbrown1 02-16-2009 06:53 PM

weight

He is barley over 2 pounds

I'd stay away from baby food fruit because it's just more sugar. Like Nutrical, it's great when his sugar drops too low to bring it up quickly, but he'll just crash again if he doesn't have food.

Lady is an insulin dependent diabetic so we've had our share of hypo episodes. I give her fruit, jelly, pancake syrup, etc. when she drops too low and gets shakey, but as soon as possible I give her a good carb/protein meal that will keep her blood sugar up.

Unless Buster is really shakey, concentrate on getting him to eat some canned food, pureed chicken and rice, etc. every two hours to keeps his blood sugar stable.

Poor baby. Did your vet think he might be younger than what you were told? Puppy mills often forge the age on paperwork to make a old enough to sell.

jsolano757 02-16-2009 07:07 PM

he sounds very sick!

the fact that he won't eat is not good! that means he isn't getting the nutrients that he needs. and he shouldnt pee that fast after he drinks. and if he vomits like that he may be allergic to the food he is eating. the vet will probably give you a/d soft food from science diet that is a prescription diet but will help his weight and food intake. he wont have to be on it forever but until he is eating normally and is at a healthy weight and everything. not only that, he is in a new environment and is adjusting to life without mom and siblings. he should still be on milk too. puppies should not be taken away from their mothers less than ten weeks old. he maybe nervous and stressed out. he really should see a vet and maybe a trip to see mom and the breeder might not be a horrible idea either. my girl had an adjustment issue when i brought her home but i took her to see mom regularly and had her on a special diet until she was comfortable and not so stressed out. and he def will need ALOT of attention and to be monitored.

MyFairLacy 02-16-2009 08:08 PM

Poor baby..I really hope he can pull through this. You are doing a great job caring for him. I agree that you really need to try to get a good protein based meal in him. Something with some meat in it. You might try watering down some canned food and feeding that through the syringe. Just be careful that he doesn't get it into his airways. Hopefully it's just hypoglycemia because he's so young and not eating and some good meals will get him through this eventually. I hope he'll eat for you soon. I'm also concerned about liver shunt...it is so common with yorkies, and constant hypoglycemia episodes and refusal to eat are some of the symptoms.

monika87va 02-16-2009 08:15 PM

I'm so happy your baby is doing better. Make sure to make him feel safe in his new home. When I got my baby he was 8 weeks old and 2 lbs. For the first few nights he would sleep on my bed rolled into a furball next to my chest. The vet said that he feels my heart beat (reminds him of his mommy) and that keeps him calm. Maybe you can try that so he can adjust quicker :) Please keep us updated !!!

I too am concerned this could be liver shunt. I thought the pup was alot smaller than it is. It seems like at 2 lbs he'd be maintaining his sugar level unless there was something underlining wrong. I hope I am wrong but I would ask the vet about it

manolos mom 02-17-2009 02:45 AM

How is Buster this morning....I pray you had a good night....

busterbrown1 02-17-2009 04:43 AM

He got up this morning on his own and walked to his water bowl. He drank quite a bit of water on his own!! No syringe! My husband and I got up every two hours and fed him baby food with cottage cheese through a syringe just 1/4 teaspoon at a time. This seems to have helped. I'll be home today with him and I'm going to try can food in a syringe and see how that goes. He has not vomited since yesterday at the vets! It's been at least 15 hours but, he has has a few loose bowel movements. I hope with me being at home with him today that will help him and he can go back to work with my husband the rest of the week. Thanks again for all of your advise and support! I will keep you posted!

BonBon 02-17-2009 05:07 AM

That's great news! Hang in there little guy.

Ladymom 02-17-2009 05:54 AM

What a great update this morning! Keep up the good work!

luvfla 02-17-2009 06:15 AM

Well looks like Buster Brown picked the right parents to get him on the right track! Keeping you in my thoughts.

Lou 02-17-2009 06:51 AM

I am glad your baby is doing a little better.

I would like to suggest to you that you think about going to a different vet. A vet should be able to draw blood from a 2lb puppy. Adie didn't weigh that much and the vet put an IV in her little leg without a problem. Also the vet should have told you about the prescription dog food (A/D). And one more thing...When a puppy that small is vomiting the vet should give you a prescription to stop it as well as the antibiotics. While I am on the topic of antibiotics - they can cause diarrhea.

I see you are getting some really good advice on this site and I thank God for all the many new friends you have found. Keep up the good work - Take good care of your little guy and again, keep us posted. We care!
Lou
PS
Did you ever tell us his name? Is it Buster?

No throwing up is very good, I was wondering, if the loose poop could be for switching foods, these babies have very sensitive stomachs, also, Max does not tolerates the cottage cheese to well, could this be it?

chachi 02-17-2009 07:18 AM

Give him a little canned pumpkin for the loose stools

I agree. I guess I missed that Buster was already two pounds. Your vet should have been able to take blood from him. It's very easy to take blood from the jugular vein.

I also agree with MyFairLacy. At two pounds, he is big for only seven weeks. He is more the size that a 12 week old would be so he should be better able to regulate his blood sugar. It's very important that blood be taken and his liver function evaluated. Yorkies are 36 times more likely to have shunt than all other breeds combined and a puppy from a puppymill is at a very high risk for genetic conditions.

manolos mom 02-17-2009 09:31 AM

I rushed home from work let my gang out and ran to the computer to see how Buster did last night...Im so happy for all of you. Just keep doing this for the next 3 weeks and I bet he will be running all over your house. I also agree that you need to call another Vet to get blood work done on Buster. Good Luck to you guys. Buster is very lucky to have such great parents..Keep us updated....

Buster Brown

Yes that is his name. Our last name is Brown and we have 5 kids 3 girls and 2 boys so we thought we better name him something Brown so we could complete our Brady bunch!!:)

yorkiesmiles 02-17-2009 10:50 AM

How is Buster doing this afternoon? Is that him in your avatar?

busterbrown1 02-17-2009 10:54 AM

Oh

And he fits in very well. He is well loved in our home and we just want him to be better. He is still up and down. Not near as bad as yest but we have changed the game plan on his food. We were giving him fruit baby food every 2 hours and ped lite. We had been doing that all night and all morning. With advise from you guys we think we should just force fed him the soft food and the beneful chicken and rice. He's not gonna eat anything on his own at this point so why not. If we have to force feed one we might as well force feed what he needs. He is up then down and it makes since with him eating all sugar that he needs the protein and carbs bad so this is how we will be feeding him today and tonight. Well my wife will she took the day off to be with him and I will have him again at work tom. Worse comes to worse I will have to hire someone to help me take care of him at work while im busy. I have been the one that has said no about having a new dog but at this point he is our family and just as it was before he came into our life we take up for our own and we will do the same for this little guy no matter what!!:)

busterbrown1 02-17-2009 10:56 AM

yes

That was him the day before yest so we need to update it a little. He looks a little better than that now.

Ladymom 02-17-2009 11:00 AM

It sounds like you've got a great plan to give Buster round the clock care!:thumbup:

Oh I just love you guys! You now have (officially) yorkie fever and you will never be the same again! Great job!

Juliealfies mum 02-17-2009 11:56 AM

Just checking in on how our little Buster is doing today, sounds as if you are coping well and hopefully you will see him start to come on.:animal-pa There is nothing worse than when our little ones sre sick but at least we can allways come on here and get some help no matter what time of day it is.

mscat 02-17-2009 11:58 AM

I am just catching up on how Buster is doing from yesterday... My goodness this much be so stressful on the whole family . I hope that Buster is feeling better this afternoon and his blood sugar has stabilized.
i am thinking that 2lbs is big enough for the vet to get a blood sample.. They really need to do further tests on Buster to rule out any other possible health issues. Just to be on the safe side.
Continue to force Buster to eat , and try not to change his foods around too much, because this will further upset his tummy. Canned pumpkin will settle his belly down, which has already been suggested. Buster is very lucky to have such dedicated human parents and a loving family:) You are correct that bring home a little puppy is so much work! Especially when the pup is not feeling well. It is very good that your able to stay at home with him today and care for Buster. he needs all the love and attention from you as well as getting him to eat often, and to be watched over. I hope Buster is going to be ok and feeling better soon .
