Yes, that can happen when you give them homecooked. The same can happen when you give them canned and then try to go back to kibble. Oddly enough, Ellie eats all homecooked all the time and still likes kibble. Strange little girl. |
well i think u should consider urself very luck then! i wish it was that easy to go back to the wet food! grrrr ;) thanks for trying to help with the home cooking but i just dont have enough knowledge and im better off with the puppy food.. |
wow, sounds like you and princeton have had a busy new year. Glad to hear its not a shunt. |
Way to go Princeton...happy to hear the test came back with good results. I know home cooking can be done and done well...I too, feel inadequate to feed Winston home cooked. I would worry about him not getting enough of what he needs and getting too much of what he doesn't. In my mind, and I could definitely be wrong, they call it "dog food" for a reason...it's meant to be eaten by dogs. Just as "baby food" is meant to be eaten by babies...hmmmm...I have so much to learn. Good luck with his feedings, but don't be surprised if he eats "around" the dog food to get to the good stuff!!! |
Melissa, Meg *loves* "The Honest Kitchen". It's a wet food (dehydrated cooked meat/raw veg/etc, and you add water) but she is nuts about it. It might be worth a try for Prince. I'd like to get her to be able to eat kibble eventually - just because 1) it's more practical while I'm traveling with her, and 2) because it keeps her teeth clean. But at least she's eating a nutritious food in the meantime. I'm going to start adding a little crushed kibble into the wet to get her used to a little crunch. My vet said that wet food is fine to feed a dog as long as she will let you brush her teeth. She also suggested giving Meg a small Nylabone to help with the tooth thing. Also, she said that since Meg is going to lose her baby teeth anyway, it's not too big of a deal if she doesn't like having her teeth brushed for now. Of course, I still need to get her used to having her teeth brushed. Organic, Holistic Pet Food, Premium Pet Food - The Honest Kitchen |
thanks i need to try that, well tonight was just a messs.. i tried to get prince back on his wet food and offered it to him with some chicken on top and broth over it. he refused to eat anything but the chicken. i was worried that he just hadnt eaten enough so i was literally opening his mouth and putting the wet food in it. he was growling and snapping at me:( i became so upset bc i feel horrible doing this to him. i just dont know what im going to do:confused: i then cooked some beef and offered that on top of wet, once again he will NOT eat the wet. im in such a dilema here. i dont know if he just doesnt like this type of food or he is just being spoiled. im worry hes going to bed with an empty tummy. def dont need another hypo incident.HELP! |
Can you try a different brand of wet dog food? Meg eats the Newman's Own brand, but won't touch IAM's or any other wet food I've put out. Did you warm it up a little (especially if it just came out of the fridge)? I've noticed that some wet foods are much harder than others. Meg likes it soft, but if you added chicken broth, it probably was soft/mushy. Maybe Prince likes his wet food a little harder? Can you give him some Pedialyte or Clini-Care to supplement the feedings so at least he's getting some calories/sugar/electrolytes in him? Syringe feeding him might be easier than trying to put the food in his mouth via your fingers. I'm not talking "syringe down the throat" but just to get the food in his mouth. I haven't done this though, so I don't know how effective and/or impossible this might be. Someone recommended it to me when I was trying to get Meg to eat. I don't know if you just put the chicken on top or if you mixed it in, but Meg seems to eat best when I mix some in, then sprinkle some on top. And she is crazy about egg yolk. That might not be the best habit to get started on, but... it gets her to eat if I crumble it on her food. Can you coat a piece of chicken in wet food, then let Prince lick it off your hand/fingers? This might be a good way to introduce him to a new flavor. And if all else fails, just give him more chicken so he isn't going without food. You can always try wet food again in the morning. |
My girl had the same problem when she was a baby. She went hypo and ended up in a coma but came through with no problems. She lived on Nuri-Cal (it comes in a tube and you get it at any pet store or from the vet) i would give her a finger length a couple times a day if she did not feel like eating. Some days that's what she lived on until she would start eating again. Nutri-Cal was used as a food supplement for several months to keep her sugar up. It was a life saver for me. |
Oh my God, that's so scary that she actually went into a coma. How long was she in the coma for? Man... I'm so glad she is doing well now. |

thanks so much for ur advice... its 7am here now and im trying to feed him again.:( its like i dread every feeding bc i get so upset. i am going today to look at some new wet foods and see if i can find anything. ive tried everything from cold, warm, soft, hard, mushy microwaved.. nothing works. i mixed chicken in and on top but he just picks it out or will smell it and turn his nose up. yes we do have nutrical it is a life saver for us also but even still i want him to eat. i do give him 2 fingertips b4 every meal. i was wondering if that could be messing with his appetite? making him feel full or something? but no cus he'll eat homecooked. i am just beside myself bc i feel like ive tried everything! i really dont want to do the syringe feeding it will stress him out.. my last option is switching the food, i dont know to even look for these good foods? theres no petco by me..just supermarket & petland. what type should i pick up?:animal-pa |
nikitta, he does drink alot so im not worried about dehydration. i mix rebound in with his water. its from his vet and its really good for them. he drinks alot so i think hes okay with that. its just the food im worried about |
its 8am now, ive been trying to feed prince since 7am. he ate next to nothing. im going to cry..please pray for us. & to think.. i have to do this again in 4 hours!:( |
When my female Tinka was a pup, she was quite sickly and we struggled to get her to eat anything. The vet put her on a human meal replacement supplement. Everytime we fed her we also gave her a small amount of "shake" which she loved. We knew that she was getting all the nutrients and goodness she needed and even picked up a little weight whilst she was on it. In South Africa we don't have a huge range of pet products, hence the reason we had to use Ensure (for humans) but maybe you could get something in the States specifically for pets. |
ok i went to the honest kitchen website and the closest store to me is about 5 miles so im going to take a little drive.. i hope he likes it.. which flavor do u recommend? |
