We both have ringworm..... I got my new Yorkie, Oliver on the 7th of November. On the 18th we went to the vet for our last set of shots and she noticed some flaky skin around his ear (like it had been shaved off) and some flakes around his back. She mentioned it could be a little staph infection and gave me some ointment. Last Wednesday I went to the dermatologist myself for some round patches of redness on my chest and she gave me some antifungal cream and sent out a culture. Yesterday I noticed a huge patch of dry skin around Oliver's leg and because it was Saturday, went to my backup vet. He used what I think is called the Woods test (ultra violet light) and saw his little body was riddled with flaky skin and patches of matted hair. Based on both of our conditions (haha), he took a sample of hair from Oliver to send to the lab and concluded it was probably ringworm. He gave me Chlorhexaderm shampoo (bathe Oliver 2x a week and leave on for 10-15 minutes) and Conofite Lotion to put on affected areas (he shaved the area around his leg). He was very hesitant to prescribe oral meds for him because he's only 5 months old and weighs 3.5lbs. He also knew I had a really tough time with my last yorkie who was diagnosed with underdeveloped kidneys and I treated him till he died of kidney failure at 17 months. Based on my experience and how some of these oral meds can damage the organs, he wanted to try this first. Oliver sleeps with me and last night I had to crate him. I tried restricting him to the laundry room but he was barking and creating chaos, so I crated him and put it at the edge of my bed. He was miserable but we toughed it out. During the day though - do I restrict him to the laundry area...or do I lay a blanket over the couch and wash it every night? I also bring him to work with me every day....and leaving him at home may be a bit of a problem. How long is he contagious? Ughhh.....I keep reading that ringworm is just awful to get rid of and often comes back. What should I do - I've had a hell of a year and this is just another blow....i'm even considering moving and throwing out all the furniture once this clears up so that I don't have to deal with this again - any suggestions on what I do with him while he's being treated??? Has anyone tried the oral meds - I'm very hesitant to give it a go..... On another note - I let a neighbors cat in my home in July - he left me fleas as a parting gift (haha). No joke - it was an awful experience, especially since I had no pets at the time. I was riddled with flea bites and it took forever to clear up. I vacuumed every night, did laundry ever day, got Fleabusters out and finally got rid of them. Is it possible that the cat left behind some spores? is it possible Oliver could have gotten such a bad case of ringworm from the time I brought him home on the 7th and took him to the vet on the 18th. Seems like the timeline is a bit coincidental. Any suggestions would be so helpful....i'm grateful this is not life threatening (like with my other 2 yorkies) but ughhh....i'm so tired of dealing with these funky little micro-organisms....

I would stay away from oral meds. Try a little apple cider vinegar in his water. 1/2 tea spoon in 1 cup. This will help his PH balance. After the meds clear it up, when he gets a bath you can rinse him with the vinegar solution. [same 1/2 ts to 1 cup water] Use a PH balanced shampoo & cream rinse like Bio Groom. You can spray every thing down with bleach water mixed 1 table spoon to 2 liters of water or 2 table spoons to 1 gallon. It will kill fungus and viruses but shouldn't fade fabric. you might want to spot test first. There is no need to mix it any stronger.

I'm sure Oliver probably came with ringworm from his breeder. Did you get a health guarantee? Hopefully she will reimburse you for the cost of his treatment. Ringworm can be stubborn to clear up. The Ringworm Page

OMG - they don't think she's going to make it???? Have they given her anything? When I went in to my regular vet they thought Oliver had a little staph infection too and she gave me cream. When I saw it spread a week later (and I had it too), I went to my backup vet who took a culture and it came back positive. I don't know if its getting better but I'm doing my best. My backup vet has suggested that I give him a small dose of Itraconazole (or Sporonox) because he says I can be battling this for the longest time. Only thing is with this med, he wants to monitor his liver because it can destroy the liver enzymes. He disclosed this after I told him about my last 2 horrible experiences (one yorkie with intestinal disease that dies at 2 1/2 yrs and my next who died of renal failure at 17months). i'm very nervous about this....

A cat we brought in from a cat shelter infested my resident indoor cat, my dog, and myself with ringworm. It didn't last long... this was about 7 years ago. I got the red rashy dry skin on my shins where he rubs up against as I'm most in shorts indoors. My indoor cat lost all of what little hair she normally naturally has on her brow and a bit beyond there as that's where he liked to groom her. I guess this was spread by saliva. I can't recall what the vet prescribed for them but I do recall it only required that one vet visit to cure them/us all of the infestation. I didn't do any clean-up above and beyond our usual laundry cleaning and didn't think about doing a thorough carpet cleaning even. It never came back and my cat grew her brow/head hairs back as have my shins! This was before our yorkie. Our shih-tzu was a 10-12 lb happy healthy adult dog at the time while our indoor cat was months old. Good luck! I know it wasn't funny having ringworms myself when all but my then bf got it!

We had a puppy once with ringworm, and it took forever to get rid of, but what finally worked with her, we washed her everyday in betadine shampoo, and put lotrimin, antifungal, on the spots everyday. We did it well past when her hair started to come back, and within a month it was gone!! Once it was gone, we just spring cleaned, swept, washed curtains, ect, and I have never had a problem since. Good Luck

thank you guys so much!!!! My baby has been battling this a few months, but the skin scrapings were negative, and the black light never shown up anything, it is over her whole body now she is on anitboctics now and I have different shampoo again, but her poor little body, her skinjust flakes off. the strange thing is my other yorkies do not have this... I have her on a heating pad, (orshe can lay on it cause she shivers alot. I'm so worried about her, her hair coat seems so dry. I know I shouldn't bathe her so often but if it was me I would need to just soak in the tub,
