| No Longer a Member | It is good practice to make sure when you buy a puppy it has had atleast 2 shots at 2 weeks apart for Parvo. And then give parvo shot every 2 weeks until 4 months old if its in the hot summer , Be very careful taking your puppy to the vet in the summer, that is the first place to pick it up at. Actually the vet is where you an pick up alot of things if your not careful because that is where the sick animals are. People bring there pets to the vet that are sick and if they have parvo they sit in the waiting room same as you and the dog may have it on his paws , fur etc etc, next dog comes along and picks it up and it spreads fast. I never take my puppys to the vet for shots after they stop nursing, I give the shots myself. |

| Parvo is horrible. I just delt with that this past July. Bleach EVERYTHING! i mean everything. Mix it up 3 to 1. for every 3 cups of water, put 1 cup of bleach. Do the floors the baseboards, doors. anywhere where the dog has been or you have stepped with your feet / shoes. throw away everything that belonged to the dog.(beds ect). I also went as crazy as to spray the yard with bleach. It doesnt kill grass, but it does kill weeds.(I never could find the parvo killer sprays, only place i found them were online) I took ALLL of the laundry in our house and washed it with bleach, i also cleaned the bottom of our shoes with bleach water. I just about cleaned every thing i have ever touched in my house. it took me about 7 hours to do the entire house... when you do the floors, the bleach water needs to sit for about 10-20 mins soaking. I also let mine dry naturaly.. so mine set for a while and even though once was enough, i did mine 2 more times. I did my yard because i was military, and moving out of the house in a month, and didnt want a family moving in (or next door neighbors new puppy that was 10 weeks) to get it and go through what i went through.. Also... dont bury a dog in the back yard or ground that has died of parvo... it will stay int he dirt for a very long time. My puppy was a chihuahua that was 6 months old, and had all shots. Even though your puppy is vaccinated it can still get it. Small chance but its still possible. somethings you just cannot prevent. I will now, no longer allow people in my house with shoes on. You never know what is in their house, or where their feet have been! Im very sorry for your loss. |

| Thank you everyone for all your info. I am really worried now, I want to get another yorkie. But I am worried that she will come down with the virus too. ![]() And about the bleach, won't it change the color of the carpet?

| Yes the bleach would.. i didnt have carpet in my home, It was all hard floor. but you should order that Parvo killer spray online... and do your carpets with that. I was told that it didnt change the color of furniture. A vet in my area said to hit up a tractor store??? that they should have it there, but at the time i didnt understand what she meant... but i seen a commercial where i live now, a tractor store advertising... lol it makes sense now =) And please wait a few months before you get another puppy!!! and make sure its had atleast its second set of shots before you bring it into your home. If you dont, you can possibly have another puppy come down with parvo Remember to also do the floor to your car =) The virus is highly spread by feces... each ounce of poop he or she had on your floor, was about 1 million viral particals. That if not delt with, can live in your house, or outside for a full year! Please do alot of research before you bring another puppy home! you want to make sure you cleaned everything the best way you can, and wait as long as you can. Just in case. =) Also shelters in your area will have alot of information on how to do your carpets if you cant get that spray online. |

| So sorry for your losss. I had a Chihuahua with parvo over the summer. I was told by my vet that they can pass the parvo virus in their feces for up to one year. He advised me not to bring another puppy into the house unless it had been fully vaccinated. Thankfully my Chihuahua survived but I have never bleached so much stuff in my life! |

| I would wait 6 months to a year before you brought a new puppy into the home, and yes, make sure it is adequately vaccinated.

He was also not happy with my choice of brand. I used Solo-Jec and he said that he has treated dogs who had Parvo that were given that very same shot! Sorry to change the subject...

| I am so sorry for your loss. Parvo is a hideous thing to go through with any fur baby. We had a litter of German shepherd puppies and two out of the whole litter got it as they hadn't had their 3rd vaccine yet and they were playing in our fenced backyard. Thankfully they recovered but we knew how Parvo is very very easily transmitted, you, your clothing, a bird/squirrel/rat or an animal of some sort easily transport the virus once they had stepped on a contaminated area, your vehicle can be driven over a spot that had been contaminated and could easily bring it home into your yard/driveway. It was in no way your fault. And again I am sorry for you loss and that you had to go through this. Hugs and Prayers to you and your family at this hard time. |
