| giardiasis I purchased a puppy from a breeder and from the time I got him home he had loose stools. I figured it was the change of water and food. It never really cleared up entirely. I took him to the vet on Monday because he was crying when he tried to poop(he's 16 weeks old). They figured it was his anal glands. I took a stool specimen and It came back today with giardiasis. Is this a common parasite with breeders? I have 2 other dogs that I am now worried about. They share a common fenced in back yard. He had been wormed by the breeder but it didn't take care of the problem. The vet has given me some powder to mix in his food for a week and then to repeat in 3 weeks. None of my other dogs seem to have a problem. should I be worried about them too? And ME he sleeps with me. |

| Your other dogs should be treated as a precaution. Giardia can be very difficult to get rid of. Everything he has come in contact with needs to be disinfected. If he potties outside, wash his feet, belly and hind end every single time before he comes back inside (baby wipes are great for this). The giardia spores are contained within the fecal matter and can easily be spread, so picking up his poop and properly disposing of it can aid in not continuing to contaminate. Giardia is a very common parasite that may never truly go away. It just becomes dormant. Any stressor can bring it quickly back.

| Giardiasis I have two dogs that have had Giardia. Both had as puppies. You do not need to treat your other dogs as long as you clean up the infected poop right away. The other dogs can contract Giardia by eating or licking the infected poop. Giardia also comes from dirty water, such as puddles or gutter water. It is very common in puppies. Make sure you give your dog all the meds prescribed. You can get it too so make sure you wash your hands after handling any poop. Its also a good idea to use baby wipes on your dog after he/she goes. |

| Gus had giardia as a pup. Gus was wormed. Fortunately Squirt didn't get infected, and didn't need to be wormed (or is it dewormed?). I recommend getting fecal tests for your other dogs.
