! I emailed my sister, who is a doctor (an internist) a few questions and will see what she says. His throat is probably partly irritated, but I'm also worried about aspiration. The lungs *can* digest some aspirates, so that's what I'm thinking (hoping). He only made that irritated sound once, so far.

| Oh my gosh! I just read your post! We both had scary nights last night. I feel badly for freaking out so much about mine, yours sounds so much worse. I am so glad the little one is okay today. Thank you again for all your advice, especially after what you have just been through.

| If anybody in this world knows what to do in any situation ....it would be you. I should have known you were ready to do the rescue breathing. What in the heck was I thinking. Duh, this is Ann you are talking to Denise. It scares me to death, that YOU got scared. You are our rock! Since Bernie will eat anything he sees I really need to know how to do the heimlich on an animal. I used it frequently on my skin children in their toddler days. Maybe one day you can add that to the looonnngg list of things you've already taught me! I sincerely hope there is nothing too terribly wrong. Please keep this thread updated, we're all concerned.

| Is it possible he ate something funny? I only say that because a month or so ago I had sliced up a nectarine in pretty big slices and of course then Loki wanted to go outside so I set it on the floor (big mistake). When he came in he ate a big piece and he probably would have chewed it but I screamed "NO!" (I'm an idiot -he knows 'leave it' and 'drop it' and he would have done either, but I screamed NO...ugh) and he swallowed it whole. He did the same thing with the whining and the breathing. I actually put him in the bathtub because he looked like he was going to puke and eventually he did but just foamy stuff came up not the nectarine. I was afraid to induce vomiting in case it got stuck on the way back up. It obviously made it past his airway, but it probably hurt like hell going down and that's what the whining and shallow breathing was all about. After about 30 minutes of me watching him it must have made it to his stomach and he was fine. He never even had diarrhea...

| I am so sorry that you had to go through that. I know exactly what you are talking about because about 1 month ago, Sadie woke up in the morning and stood up and started that breathing thing. She was gasping like she had something stuck in her throat and she was working so hard to breathe, her little body was shaking...I was so scared and could not imagine what was wrong. I grabbed her and put my finger down her throat (could not think to do anything else) and she would stop for a minute and then start again...I grabbed her up and off to the vet we went and like you, about 1/2 way there (we are about 30 miles) she just stopped and by the time we got to the vet, she was breathing normally. He could not find anything wrong and finally decided that she had either an allergy of some sort or had something stuck in her throat and it had dislodged and gone on down. My husband and I were thinking and he said the same thing...we have a down comforter and he thinks either she got a feather in her throat or nose. Her nose was also running. Crazy what these little babies can get into! My vet did not seem to think it had anything to do with a collapsed trachea and I so hope he was right. She has been fine since with no side effects nor has she had any more episodes like that!! I am praying that your Marcel will have none either!!!! |

| I just saw this... GOSh what A night It does seem like their wassomething causing A blockage in his throat. Almost like he was choking ? Luckily, it was not A complete blockage and he could get in enough air . Feathers, or anything could have done this to him. I have very long hair, and well, suzi has actually Pooed out , hair before Either getting a hold of A hair brush or what ever , I fear that this could happen to her. Maybe because he was asleep and relaxed that something triggered an eposoide .one other possibility, is I know people can Have Sleep Apnea , or breath hard when they sleep , but if dogs can have it too, then maybe that was it? Or if it was really warm in your home, it may have triggered an attack? If it was allergy related then it is possible that the throat could have swelled making it hard to breath. Then getting him out of the house could have helped him breathe easier again, meaning that it may have been triggered by A bug, or anything in the air? Sometimes, the extra moment helps open the airway too. That could have helped him breath easier .

I am just brainstorming possibilites? I am very glad he is ok ! i'd be coming unglued if that were my Suzi .... My gosh that is scary .

| Yes, it was like she was using every ounce of strength that she had to get air through. It did not sound like a lung thing...I don't know, it was the scariest thing though. I was shaking worse than she was...well, maybe not worse, but as bad. And then, it is still scary that I do not know exactly what caused it, but I hope it does not happen again. The vet did give her some antibiotics and she took those for about 5 days. She is all better now, so don't worry too much about Marcel...I'll bet he will be fine as well!! |

| Oh scary larry!!! What a fright. I'm glad he seems back to normal today. Big hugs My vet gives out fridge magnets. I have one with their regular number and one that's red with the 24 hour emergency number. Suggest that to your vet maybe, or get those make your own ones. Hey V... just came up with another product line for your business!!!!! Fridge magnets customized with peoples emergency information; vet information; list of food allergies; etc.
