Is it possible he ate something funny? I only say that because a month or so ago I had sliced up a nectarine in pretty big slices and of course then Loki wanted to go outside so I set it on the floor (big mistake). When he came in he ate a big piece and he probably would have chewed it but I screamed "NO!" (I'm an idiot -he knows 'leave it' and 'drop it' and he would have done either, but I screamed NO...ugh) and he swallowed it whole. He did the same thing with the whining and the breathing. I actually put him in the bathtub because he looked like he was going to puke and eventually he did but just foamy stuff came up not the nectarine. I was afraid to induce vomiting in case it got stuck on the way back up. It obviously made it past his airway, but it probably hurt like hell going down and that's what the whining and shallow breathing was all about. After about 30 minutes of me watching him it must have made it to his stomach and he was fine. He never even had diarrhea...
