| Tucker is sick and I am sad On Friday, we woke up to Tucker having had diahrrea all over our bedroom. It looked like it was several episodes. He had diahrrea throughout the day but I didn't start to get too concerned until he started vomiting. He threw up 7 times! Also, he was not his usual Tucker self, he was pretty lethargic. Obviously, I brought him to the vet right away and they took x-rays to look for obstructions and did blood work to check for various things and...nothing! So 2 hours and $300 later, they gave him somem shots and some fluids and sent us home with prescription food and some meds to calm his belly. The diagnosis was he ate something that didn't agree with him. After withholding all food for Friday and only giving him prescription food Saturday and Sunday with no more issues after we left the vet's, I gave him a bit of his normal dry food with the prescription food yesterday. Then we wake up in the middle of the night last night and he has vomited all over our bed! The poor boy! He has thrown up 3 times today and the vet said we should throw away his old dry food (Wellness Simple Solutions) as it may have been a bad bag and feed him prescription only for a week. I am so sad for my little boy! He is miserable and mopey and now he won't even try to eat! Any advice?

| canned pumpkin, not the pie filling, will help with constipation and diarrhea. How big is Tucker. Pepper had a bout last week (she weighs 10 lbs) and I gave here about 2 Tablespoons of pumpkin and some cottage cheese. rice will help firm up the stool as well. make a little bit of boiled chicken breast with some rice after tuckers tummy has settled. you can also give chicken broth(low sodium) while waiting for his tummy to settle. Wiley's mom is great with dietary issues, try posting there or pm'ing her.

| Thank you very much for your advice! Tucker is 8 pounds. He really hasn't had much bowel movement activity since Friday (2 yesterday, both pretty firm), it's the vomiting and total aversion to food I'm worried most about. I think I'll try and give him some rice and chicken...that usually helps his belly when he has diahrrea (trust me, we've dealt with diahrrea before! )

| What are his amylase and lipase levels? If this continues is the very planning on doing an ultrasound or something to rule out pancreatitis? Is the diarrhea bloody or not? Is Tucker a pup or an adult?

| All his levels were normal. I can't remember what the numbers were but the vet showed them to me and showed me the proper ranges, too. Tucker is 1.5 years old. I know she mentioned pancreatitis and, though his pancreas levels were normal according to the bloodwork, she said we were going to proceed as if it was... hence the medicine and prescription food. Is there something different I should be doing?

| Oh, and his diahrrea was not bloody. It was (gross, I know) the color of peanut butter although he hasn't had any diahrrea since Friday.

| I wouldn't throw away the Wellness because you can have it tested and can actually sue the company if this is bad. Always make sure you don't give ALL the food to anyone for testing. Keep the bag with most of the food in it for just in case purposes. These are the very reasons I keep stressing how much better and safer it is to home cook. I do hope your little boy makes a fast recovery.

| Had you thought about heat stroke as a reason for the vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy

| Proceeding like it is pancreatitis is probably okay but the protocol the vet is using is questionable. Food in patients with pancreatitis is usually pulled and they are put on IVs. If he is still vomiting something probably needs to be done. It could just be something like gastroenteritis but if the vet has any suspicion that it is the pancreatitis, it has to be brought under control.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | YorkieDaze is right - you should keep some Wellness kibble in case you want it tested. If ALL blood tests are 100% normal, why is the vet wanting to proceed as if it's pancreatitis? This part of the vet's decision doesn't make any sense to me. I'm the worst fan of prescription foods, but if he was doing okay on it for those 2 days - I'd probably put him back on it, just to get him settled. See how he does for a few days. If he stays settled, it does make me wonder about that bag of food. If he stays settled over the next week, I'd probably then transition him off the food. That said, I share EllieMay's (Crystal) concerns as to "what's going on here" - given the direction the vet is going here (kinda odd). IF he gets sick again - I always give mashed potatoes (no protein right away, to hard to digest) - either canned or fresh with a bit of butter. You can also give a 1/2-1 tsp of Pepto Bismol. Canned pumpkin for diarrhea or if it's really bad, Immodiam or Kaeopectate (1/2-1 tsp). Keep us posted!

| Is it safe to give a dog something like a tums tablet? For an upset stomach? I am just curious... Suzi has not had these problems yet, but I want to be prepared in case. She would eat one of those tablets no problem... I have them for myself, and she thinks they are candy....

| Hope Tucker feels better soon!! I'm suspicious about the food (Wellness) too especially after you mentioned that he started throwing up after you went to see the vet!! Good luck to you and Tucker and do keep us updated!!

| Something similiar with my Baby Zoey. My vet had some sort of meter that they put a tiny drop of blood in (takes 20 min for a reading) to see if she had pancreatitis. She didn't so they treated her for colitis due to stress. |
