My little Shadow Donating YT Member | Previcox? Pain meds for yr baby?? Bella was recently spayed/teeth extractions & the vet prescribed Previcox for pain when needed. She gets only 1/4 tablet once a day "if needed". I gave her one the day after surgery, & one another day. She's fine now, but I've googled/found some really sad stories about the use of this drug. I know that we/animals can have a reaction to "any" drug @ "any" time. Searched on YT and found a few yrs back, but nothing recent. What pain med was prescribed for yr baby? Any opinions about using Previcox? I have a call in to the Vet because she is still having itching problems & I don't want to give her Benadryl since she recently took this drug. I want his opinion, but even then.....I'm so skeptical? Someone was nice enough to let me know to stop the Benadryl a while before her surgery, which I did. Appreciate all the advice here!!

| Usually NSAIDs are given after spays because they are thought to work best. If Bella doesn't have any underlying medical issues (especially liver), everything should be fine. NSAIDs are never my first choice but the risk is minimal. Carprofen (Rimadyl) is a very popular drug post spay. If you are concerned or you think she is having side effects from it, you can always have blood work done. I think for the short amount of time she is going to be on it though, as long as she is healthy, everything should be fine.

My little Shadow Donating YT Member | Well, a few mins after posting, the Vet returned my call. He says that it should be ok to give her Benadryl now. He said steroid drugs would not be given in combination with Previcox, but Benadryl should be fine to get her through til next Thurs for her appt. Of course, I'm not giving any more Previcox....she doesn't need that now. Do you agree giving her Benadryl this soon after? signed: concerned Mommy after reading many sad stories

| I would give it if the vet says it is okay. What is the itching from? If it is something that Ivermectin will help (mites), why did the vet spay her without getting them under control first?

My little Shadow Donating YT Member | We don't know for sure what the itching is coming from?? This was going to be my next thread to help me & others hopefully. The itching had gotten better & then right before she needed to get spayed...itching worsened!! I had delayed as long as I could because of her itching....she was soon to start heat cycle tho. Vet wanted to try Ivermectin in case it was mites?? Ironically, both times the itching worsens is when she nears her heat cycle which is what I wanted to discuss in next thread??

| The Ivermectin given for mites is an off label dose and in my opinion shouldn't be given unless there is a good reason to. I have no idea about the heat cycle causing itching. I'm not saying to not go the Ivermectin route but it would be nice to have a positive diagnosis of mites before putting her body through that. Has a skin scraping been done? Has the vet considered trying Revolution if he/she thinks it is mites? It is the regular dose but I think it is given twice within two weeks of each other. Some vets don't think it works as well as Ivermectin but if she is improving and mites seem probably, then you could go on to Ivermectin? I don't really know but I think I would want other things looked at first like allergies... I will watch your other thread. Are you sure this isn't happening in spring/summer only? What food is she on? Last edited by Ellie May; 08-01-2008 at 10:58 AM. |

My little Shadow Donating YT Member | I meant to say that the Vet even told me that "mites" were not the worst thing it could be because it was "treatable" compared to finding allergy problems. I guess he's trying this to rule it out if not the case?

| Mites are hard to catch on a scraping and they can get worse after warm water touches the skin (baths). If the vet thinks you need to go that way, maybe you need to.
