| Vomiting???? My daughter called me this morning and Leah's been vomiting. (she's 13 wks and just over 2 lbs.) She said she had thrown up twice in her crate, twice at home, 4 times while at work this morning. Called the vet and I took her in, the vet checked her over, no temp., no tender stomach, eyes are fine, she actually threw up while there so the doctor got to see. My daughter gave her a chew stick....not sure what, the lady we got the dog from had it in w/the other food she gave us. My daughter had gave her one earlier this week and than she had one yesterday. She just started vomiting early this morning. She's not eating but she is drinking. The vet seems to think it is just from the chew sticks and gave her some medicine to stop the vomiting. He said she probably won't eat much today but wanted to make sure she drank, which my daughter said she was. She also said she had gotten sick again since giving her the medicine an hour ago. (we lost a puppy to liver shunt in June and we are extremely paronoid about this one getting it BUT the vet said he didn't suspect this) He thinks it's just the stomach being upset over the chew sticks. What are your thoughts about it? Should we be trying to get her to eat chicken & rice or let it runs it's course? If so, how do you make this chicken & rice? Thanks, just worrying and don't want anything to happen to her....she is very special to us! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | At that age/weight, I'm really hesitant to hold food for any length of time. It could def. be that chew stick; so, I guess the vet doesn't think it's an obstruction or anything obviously? I would skip chicken/rice for now; instead, make mashed potatoes (from fresh potatoes or from canned/sliced potatoes) - just micro them - mash w/ a bit of butter. Feed some to her. The potatoes are great bc they 1) are appetizing to almost all dogs 2) are very quickly absorbed as energy/food and 3) will help abosrb any nauseous juices - so they'll help settle the tummy. Feed throughout the day - even into tomorrow if necessary. If she seems settled, go back to normal feeding. With your experience with shunt, I'd be watching for that too though - just bc you've seen some early vomiting. I mean I doubt it's from that - but you just want to watch to rule it out...

| The vet checked her stomach so I'm assuming he was checking for obstructions. I'll tell my daughter about the potato....I guess I'm worring about her not eating as well. What about karo & water? Should she add some to her water? |

Adding some karo to a small bowl of water may help her drink more, yes. You'll get her through this - we're all here for ya.

| My daughter just brought her out to me for lunch and Leah's doing better. She actually ate & drank while here and she played in the grass too. Still not her "old self" but better. She threw up again after she got her medicine but not since she ate here. It wasn't much but at least it was something in her stomach. Now she has flea's and my daughters freaking out about that!!!! Ha Ha! She's finding out how much they cost.....I keep telling her Leah is MUCH cheaper that an actual "grandchild"!!!! She keeps telling me I am worse at this worrying thing than she is. My husband thinks I'm just crazy!!!! |
