| That's just it, when the ER vet checked her, she had neck pain - but I felt the ER vet was pressing far too hard and would make any dog yelp. When our regular vet checked her and when I do, there is no yelp. That is the only symptom that was not "typical" of shunt. We had a basset pup who had liver shunt - as well as several other birth defects a couple of years ago. That's why I feel in my gut, this is more what we are looking at. She's not experiencing the low carried head all the time and she doesn't seem to have problems eating regardless of what height I place her bowl. I tested that just to see if she winced at all - she didn't. That's why it's so confusing.

| Prayers that you get a diagnosis for your baby. Please post the results of the bloodwork when you get them

| She's not spayed. No anesthesia. She (the vet at our regular office) said it was a "possibility" and she ran a complete blood workup on Molly to rule several possibilities out. At this point, it's only a guessing game and I'd rather guess on the side that my gut is telling me based on what happens when I feed Molly the high protein food and give her medication that may be harmful for her than to sit around twiddling my thumbs waiting on Monday. So far all that I've been told is not working - what I'm doing instinctively and based on what I'm reading here is. That says something. Quote:

| My Lady doesn't have a shunt, but she's been on seizure medication for nine years and it's damaged her liver. She became a very picky eater until I changed her diet. Liver compromised dogs still need protein as too little can actually damage their liver. They just need high quality protein preferably from dairy products like eggs, cottage cheese and tofu. This is a great resource for liver friendly foods and sample recipes. Liver | B-Naturals.Com Newsletter This is Dr. Center's Tofu and Rice diet: 1 lb tofu, 2 lbs cottage cheese, 4 cups cooked rice, 6 T safflower oil, 1 tsp salt substitute, 6 tsp dicalcium phosphate, 1-1 tsp pectin. Can use a strong low salt cheese to flavor. (Center S. A., Reynolds, A., College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 14853). Vegetarian kibble is also good. Petsmart carries both Avoderm and Natures Recipe vegetarian varieties. |

Petco carries Natural Balance Vegetarian as well. I think I mentioned that one already though.

| Hi...I'm from Crawfordsville in Indiana and we had the same problem w/ our young yorkie of 14 wks. Purdue was our only option too and the cost was a fortune! Unfortuanlty our yorkie was very, very sick and passed away before we could get her all the treatment she needed. I don't mean to scare you....our yorkie was very young and she went down hill over night....there wasn't much they could do for her. I was wondering if there was anywhere else to do surgery in Indiana. Even the testing for liver shunt is outragious. We got another one and I worry all the time about her. From the symptoms you describe it's not the same as when ours had her...hers were definelty ALL the signs of Liver shunt. What ER did you go to? Lafayette? Do your research....and good luck to you....I'm sure she will be fine! |
