| Yorkie has tonsilitis and won't eat...worried Our little Gracie woke me up at 4am hacking and coughing. It was bad enough we ended up calling the after hours number. They were able to work her in this morning. Found out has tonsilitis. She was given shot and then prescription of amoxicillian to take every 12 hours and a cough medicine to take every 2 hours as needed not to exceed 6 times per day. Gracie would not take the eye dropper with medicine. She ended up licking it off my fingers. The only way I could get her to take it. She looks very sickly and tired. I can see it in her eyes. She just lays at my feet and does not want to come to me when I go to get her to pick her up. She has not ate anything all day. I am concerned about her not eating...hypoclycemic(probably spelled wrong. Afraid she will get this. I tried giving her fresh soft dog food, that she loves. I tried yogurt. Is there something I could try that is good for her? What do I give her if she won't eat to prevent the hypoclycemia? Worried Mama to Gracie, Heather |

| Haven't tried this, but everyone swears by it. Ask your vet about Nutrical. Everyone here seems to give that to their babies when they aren't eating. Also, is your baby drinking water? I figure her throat is hurting and that's why she's not eating. I know I like cool things when my throat hurts. Maybe, someone here has some suggestions.

| She is not drinking any water either. I have tried putting the bowl in front her, putting the water on my fingers and even giving her an ice cube(which she loves) and nothing. Pet Store is 30 min. from me. As soon as hubby gets home from work looks like we are going to get her some nurtical as sever people have mentioned to try this. She won't even come to me and I feel so bad for her. Thanks, Heather |

| Bo would only eat wet food when he had tonsilitis. He has had it a number of times. That is how I knew when he had it he quit eating his dry food. After being on antibiotics for a couple of days he was eating just fine. He finally had them removed last month because they were flaring up too much. Let us know how your baby is doing. |

| Well, and I didn't even have any idea that yorkies could get toncilitis! I mean, if I'd thought about it, maybe, but I'd never considered the possibility! I'm SO sorry to hear that your baby is sick! If she still won't eat for a whiile I'd definitely take her back to the vet for an IV , etc. Bless her heart!

Right now it's important to keep her hydrated - if you see shaking or signs of lethargy - she could be going hypoglycemic...I've never experienced it myself - but after reading about it on these sites - the signs are usually there if you know what to look for - ALSO...like Val just said before me....GO TO THE VET if you think she's in trouble - an emergency vet if you have to - It's tough on the weekend but they can go down fast if they have a Hypoglycemic Episode....You don't want to take any chances.... I Really hope the medicine is just taking away her appetite - but Nutracal and a little syringe for water will keep her stamina up also ...if you don't have a syringe - you can soak a cloth in Water and squeeze some in her mouth Good luck and I hope she feels better fast poor baby - I had my tonsils out and man did THAT hurt..if she has a sore throat she's probably in pain....Did the vet give you any baby asprin or anything for that? | |

| Update on Gracie with tonsilitis... I have gotten her to drink some water out of a 2 oz syringe. She would have nothing to do with ice cube and she loves them. Have not gotten her to eat anything. We did give her Nutrical. Of couse we had to put it on her lips in order for to lick it off. Only way she would take it. I put out an extra bowl with watered down food in it. Then she also has reg. hard food and then her canned food that she eats. I also tried veggie tonight and yogurt and she turned up her nose. I have to give her another dropper of Amox and cough medicine before too long. Will try to get her to take some more water too. She has been up prancing and met me at the door when I returned from WalMart which was a good sign. She looks a little better in the face, not as sickly as she did earlier. So may the medicine is starting to work. I hope she gets to feeling better soon because I think it hurts me as much as it does her when she is sick. Thanks for all your responses and support.
