| Collapsing Trachea, Acid Reflux & Chest Infection HELP !!! I am a very worried Mum right now. Teddy has got a Collapsing Trachea, which I can deal with as my two others had the same thing, but has now got other problems, which seem like Acid Reflux with what the vet said is LOW GRADE INFECTION, he said his heart sounds fine, but he doesn't like the noise in his chest. So he is on antibiotics for that: NOROCLAV and for his tummy acid ANTEPSIN. It all started 4 weeks ago with him bring up bile, every evening between 5pm and 6pm and no other times. Gradually I changed his food to one for sensitive tums, (By NURTRO) As we can't get a lot of the great dry food you can in the USA and CANADA. He loves it. BUT the bile problem remained, so I have tried 3 x smaller meals daily instead of two. As I know many Yorkies bring up bile when they are empty. It didn't cure it, so off to the vet, who diagnosed this chest infection and stomach acid. He says he doesn't know what it is. We asked for a chest X-ray and Blood tests but he wants to try the antibiotics and Pepcid first. I can't help thinking he has got Acid Reflux and the Collapsing Trachea, but why the chest infection, the vet thinks his problems are all linked. It makes me think it could be a hiatis hernia (I had another Yorkie with that) and these symptoms are very similar. A hiatal hernia can cause Acid Reflux. I know I am not a vet and maybe worrying about nothing, but to be sick daily and ill at the tender age of 18 months is a worry. Any one had anything similar with all this conditions together. I need some support please. Diana & Teddy |

| I am really sorry about you little guy and will pray for him. Please don't think me insensitive but am really desperate to talk to someone whose yorkie has collapsing trachea. My 8 year old yorkie was diagnosed with this about a month ago and sometimes when he gets excited he will start to cough and I give him medicine. My vet says it is very mild now and may never get worse but I can't help but worry. Could you give me any advice or information about this condition? Thanks so much. Joyce Ann |

Hi Joyce Ann - I don't think you are insensitive at all. CT can be a worrying condition for the owner as much as the Yorkie, it is quite common with Yorkies. When you say cough what sort of cough does he do? Is it a cough like when we clear our throat or more of a honking sound, they nickname it a Goose Honk .... I have had 3 Yorkies, all of mine have had CT even though they all came from different Mum & Dad's. My older passed away due to something totally unrelated, at the age of 11 1/2 My next oldest is almost 11 and he has the same condition as the one who passed away (Chronic Heart Failure) Again not connected to CT. Teddy my baby who is 18 months today, is unwell due to what I have stated on this thread, and his CT is just a separate issue. I have my own method I have worked out with them, to calm them and help. Let me know more either on this thread or send me a PM (Private Message) I will support you all I possibly can. You are NOT alone. I know how much we love these guys. Thinking of you Diana

| Thanks so much. The cough sounds like a mixture of both your descriptions. It seems to come on more when he is barking at the window or when he and my younger yorkie Gleason start to play really hard. When this happens I try and distract him and he calms down pretty well. I don't have to give him the medicine very often. My vet told me he could live a full live with this but I really needed to hear from someone who was also going through it. I hope I can talk with you again if I get too worried. Thanks Joyce Annn |

Hi when mine get it, I sit them on my lap, gently hold there head slightly upwards, so their wind pipe is able to get air in. I then play " Mummies breathing exercise " Where I say to them, " Breathe with Mummy " and I breath in and out very slowly and deeply, I know it SOUNDS STUPID and probably looks pretty comical, but it destracts them from their fear and they are OK again in no time. It destracts them enough to get them to relax and then their breathing returns to normal. It has worked with all three of mine, obviously I am not a vet, and don't claim that this works for everyone, but it does mine. I must add, anyone MUST follow thier vets advise, with any medical issue. It is only what works with mine. None of mine have ever got worse. What medicine do you give yours. Diana

| Thanks for the advice. I will certainly try it, it sure can't hurt and Rickles loves for me to hold him and baby talk to him. My vet said we both need to research this and see what helps. I am just glad to know (even though he assured me) that they can live with this condition. Thanks for taking the time to talk with me. I really appreciate it. Joyce Ann |

| Acid Refulx My little guy Barney has the same issue with acid reflux. I have ordered Active Manuka Honey as my husband read some info online about it being able to help pets with this issue. I will keep you posted as to how it works for my little guy. |

| Did the vet say he has acid reflux or is this what you are thinking? If the vet heard sounds when he examined him and felt an xray was not needed, I am thinking it may not be as awful as you are thinking. At least I hope not! Make sure he takes his antibiotics as prescribed ... and give all of the medicine. Keep us posted!

| Davis, I have had a few pups with CT. A couple were very ill from it and it was the cause of their deaths; but I had one who passed away as an old man and it was not due to his CT. Your vet is correct. They do not all get worse! Do your research! There is a lot of information on the web if you google. You can also search on YT for threads on CT. There is a lot of information about this condition. Most important is to keep his weight within a healthy range! Also, never walk him using a collar...put a harness on him. Keeping him cool during the hot summer months is also very important. Feel free to PM me any time!
