Mr Mogli needs your good thoughts This is going to be a long post ... http://www.myspace.com/mistermogli My little baby's 7th birthday is Jan 5th. I get upset just thinking that our time together is 50-60% used up ... and I really can't fathom not having him around. -------------------- He was normal most of Sunday ... Sunday morning we brushed his teeth 'cause his breath was baaaaddd. Sunday night he went for a car ride with me (it was cold) ... stuck his head out the window as usual ... Sunday night through Wednesday morning he wasn't eating much ... drank a ton when we put out fresh ice-water. Started acting puny ... Monday morning he got a bath and dried with hair dryer because it was cold out. Tuesday night came home to puke and diarrhea everywhere. He was moving as little as possible, seemed very tired. I gave him chicken breast and rice Wednesday morning and he gobbled it up. Got some energy back, but was still not himself. He wobbled a little, I knew something was very wrong. I took him to the vet Wednesday morning and they wanted to keep him for blood work and fluids ... said his breath smelled like ketosys or something, indicating kidney problems. She called me up about an hour later with the blood results saying that most of his kidney numbers were off their scale. They've had him for 2 days for fluid and antibiotics. Running some special urine test to see if it's bacteria related. Won't have results for 5+ days. She said if his numbers come down and his appetite improves, and he's not neaseaus he can come home. --------------------------- As of this morning, Friday ... BUN - 123 (was over 130, max) Creat - 4.4 (was 5.4, max 6.0) Phosphorous - 13.8 (was over 16, max) Some anemia measurement was 26.4 -- giving injection to make more red blood cells. Said he'll need several of these. Good news is that he hasn't puked since 11am yesterday ... but they've been giving him cerinea (anti-puke med). She wants to stop cerinea, to see if he will stop puking. She wanted his numbers a lot lower. He's been on high IV fluids for 2 days. She wants to keep him for another 2 day period to see what the #'s do. If he doesn't puke, she'd be open for sending him home with pill medicines and instructions / material for injecting large amounts of fluid under his skin. But only if he's thriving at home, because if he's puking, he'd be losing the medicines that they're giving by IV currently, that we'd do by pill at home. --------------------------- In the past he's puked (couple times a month, sometimes more, sometimes way less). But the vet said don't worry about it unless it gets worse ... could just be empty stomach ... try giving pepcid. In July 2005, he had his teeth cleaned and all his blood #'s were normal. That makes it so hard that his health has declined what I feel is so fast. --------------------------- We have another dog, 25lbs ... mixed breed. She is acting pretty normal except missing Mogli. We're having her blood tested today to see if there could be environmental cause. --------------------------- My family has always had Yorkies. We've had 3 over the years, not including Mogli. All but one have lived to be almost 14 or better. One exception was about 12 or 13. He was given to me by my family for my 21st birthday. I'm a guy. I live far away from family. Mogli is my little baby that I raised. He's the 4th yorkie in our family. My dad also has one since Mogli, the 5th baby. Mogli is a ridiculously smart Yorkie ... tons of personality. He really is a shining star ... we've had a lot of yorkies and he is probably the smartest, loudest, most farty pants, snuggliest we've had. My heart is hurting so bad ...

Mogli is having his blood checked sometime today. He should be able to come home tonight ... he's still very sick, but is acting a lot better. Vet says he hasn't puked since Thursday morning. His levels are still very high, but they did come down a little. We will be taking him home with medicine and fluids to inject under his skin ... The prognosis is still up in the air though. Basically it sounds like he could get home and with diet, medicine and fluids be ok for as little as 2 days up to 2 years or more ... they really don't know .... depends how much kidney function is left. We're going to take him back to the vet later this week for blood work to see how his system doing.

We took Mogli home on Monday night. He has 4 medicines to take as well as IV fluids to inject twice daily. He first morning he sought out a toy to play with. Then we gave him his meds and he got really sleepy and basically cuddled and sat in his bed all day. He refused to eat. That's what has me worried. We can tell he doesn't feel good. I thought maybe not eating was just 'cause of yucky K/D ... but then he wouldn't eat stuff that used to make him zip around and bounce of the walls begging. This morning I made him some ground turkey and white rice ... and he did eat some, but not nearly enough. He has a follow up appointment this afternoon at the vet to check his blood levels. I'm so worried they're going to have gotten worse.

I am so sorry Mr. Mogli is sick!! Did the vet determine what the problem was? Is it his kidney? The symptoms you describe (throwing up once a month, normal bloodwork then getting really sick quickly and throwing up everywhere) sound a lot like what happened to my Willy. For us it was Willy's gall bladder that was acting up. There was a mucous plug that was blocking his gall bladder. Have they checked that or ruled it out? That may not be what it is at all. I just wanted to mention it because it sounded similar. I hope he gets well very very soon!!! My thoughts & prayers will be with you!

The vet is pretty confident that he is suffering from chronic kidney failure. I asked about possibility of some tic related illness, or a stone or something obstructing ... Due to X-rays they say that his kidneys are good size and do not appear blocked ... we are going to talk about a tic panel today. Though I hear that if this is tic related it would be worst case scenario. He has been up north a few times and it is commonplace there. All of his liver levels came back AOK and that is the chain the gall bladder is connected to. He's at home right now sleeping with his mommy while I pretend to get anything done at work.

Thank you for the prayers and thoughts. We really need them. He barely ate a bite Tuesday. This morning we tried everything in the arsenal and he could only eat 5 or so bites. He wanted to eat more, you could tell. He just doesn't feel good and is super weak. He slept at home all day with mommy until we went to the vet. Then he went nuts barking and acting almost completely normal. Except for having lost 3/4 lb ... down to 7lbs. He's so light and his muscles feel empty. Mogli's numbers are on the move, up ... the vet is keeping him overnight and we're going to Gainesville tomorrow for an AM appointment. It will be with internal medicine at UF small animal hospital. Previously the vet said UF couldn't really offer anything. Now we're being sent there. I think in our vet's mind it's so sad for such a young baby to be in this situation. Everything but his kidneys are in GREAT shape. He's always eaten well and had plenty of exercise and love. We're scared, apprehensive, etc ... we just want to do the best for him and try as hard as we can. We don't want his last days to be in a cage with IV's though.
