| Help! My Dog Fainted Last Night-she Is On Blood Pressure Meds! Please Help Us! My Yorkie Sadie fainted last night! 2x’s! she fell to the ground and was out for about 3 seconds. While she passed out she had a bowel movement. THEN she fainted again. this time for about 15-20 seconds. Again- another bowel movement. I was so scared! I thought she had died!!! She came to and was a little disoriented- but then she seemed ok. Without giving it any thought what so ever… we rushed her up to the emergency vet. She seemed ok when we got there. The emerg vet had been operating on a dog that had been hit by a car. We waited for close to 3 hrs before we decided to leave and go back home since Sadie was feeling ok and it was going on 3AM. We kept a close watch on her and I got her to vet first thing this morning. (which was less than 5 hrs after we got home) She started a new blood pressure med last Tuesday. (Amlodipine) well Tues night she looked very drugged and sleepy. However she was just given 6 pills! I have them all listed below. Oh how I hated to see her this way. Apparently we are taking her to one of the best vets here in Dallas TX. But I cannot figure out why the vet does not know what is wrong with our Sadie gril??? Mind you- our expenses have quickly soared up to 5000.00 as of today. The Vet thinks she has Glomerulonephritis but she has not ruled that out just yet. With the PROTEIN LOSS AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE this is what she is leaning towards- but I don’t know… PROTEIN LOSS IS 4 ++++ AND HER LAST PROTEIN/CREAT READING WAS 7.1! HER BLOOD PRESSURE STARTED AT 200 AND CREEPED UP TO 285 IN ONLY 2 WKS. Sadie just finished her 2nd round of antibiotics as she had a hefty urinary tract infection. The first antibiotic (Clavimox) her infection resisted - so then we started 2 wks of Baytril. She finished her last dose last Friday so we planned to do follow up urinalysis with culture tomorrow. She is losing LARGE amounts of protein in her urine. ( Research I have done shows that Urinary tract infection can be the cause of all of the protein loss in the urine) I purchased some protein strips from the drug store and tested her on Saturday morning. (she just finished her last day of her antibiotics the night before). I anticipated her finishing the antibiotics she would stop producing so much protein. But all hopes of that were diminished when the dipstick shot up to 2000 +++ on the dipstick. I do not know if her UTI is cured after finishing this second round of antibiotics or not? I am so worried about her! Here is a list of her current meds: Soloxine (Thyroid med) Claritin (allergies) Benazaperil (protein loss/blood pressure) Amlodipine besylate ¼ of a 2.5 mg tablet 1x a day- (just started a week ago) Last Tuesday evening she had all of that PLUS her Baytril and Plus a Tramadol (for pain- she was having pain in her back right leg). Well…….. after giving her all of this med it was no surprise that she was very sleepy and very drugged up. Oh how I hated to see her like this!!! My stomach was in knots and it still is. I have other posts listed as “protein loss in urine” and I have had anyone else experience this at all… but last night when she fainted I realized even more that something VERY SERIOUS is going on here! I DO strongly feel as if the new bp med made her bp get so low that she fainted. But the Vet tells me today that if she was going to have problems with the med it would have happened already. Since it will be 1 full week tomorrow that we started the new bp pill. We are skipping tonights bp med per the vet saying she didn’t think it would be a problem. Just in case it is the pill…She is getting ready to refer us to a internal medicine specialist but she wanted to run more blood work today and wants to see what the results are from that first. I am so worried sick, I have not eaten anything all day and I have no appetite. I am so worried for my little girl. My Sadie girl was running thought the house yesterday and so very playful… I do not understand what is wrong with her? she was simply sleeping last night and woke up- and then she fell to the ground on her side. Then the bowel movement.. and then once more she passed out. And again another bowel movement. I am so worried!!! I am so afraid to give her this bp pill every again (amlodipine) what else could have made her pass out? I even called the pharmacist today (since it is a human medication) and even they said that her blood pressure could have dropped so low that is why she passed out. Has anyone ever experienced high blood pressure OR fainting… Or protein loss in urine? Please help if so- I would be so blessed to get your advice or response. Sorry this is so long |

| I Really Think The Blood Pressure Med She Is On Made Her Blood Pressure Drop Too Low. So Scared.... |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i've been a vet tech for at least 5 years now and i have never seen a dog just faint. I'm so sorry, you must be so scared. I do agree that she should go see an Internal Med vet. They have lots of experience with these types of things. When you vet took a urine sample, did he do a urine culture or just a UA? maybe the bacteria in her urine is resistant to the ABs that she's been on? Or maybe its something else.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh my gosh! If she lost her bowels, it makes me think she actually had a seizure, not a fainting episode. Granted, HB medicine can make BP drop too low, and you can feel dizzy/faint. But her episodes almost sound like seizures. I wish I had advice, but all I can think of is to get a 2nd opinion and perhaps go to a vet school University hospital, if you can. I am SO sorry you're going through this, how frightening!

| I don't have an answer, but have you looked up all of the medications to see if they interact safely? Sophie was on Budesonide (human) and I read extensively and discovered an interaction with another med the vet prescribed. Hope you find an answer soon. I do believe when you faint, even humans may pass urine or feces. Good luck. Warmly, Deborah

| I am just checking in to see how your Sadie is doing. I just read your PM, and you're so welcome Hon. I just wish there was more info that I could give you, but unfortunately I know too little about her condition. The others here have given you really good advice. Hugs to you both, Lauren

| Sadie is doing good We have discontinued the Amlodipine- the vet wants to further research. Sadie is so energetic and has been feeling good this whole time. It's hard to believe that something is going on with her. I mean, we would have never taken her to the vet bc she is completely normal. But her urinalysis and protein loss show different. I have cut back to only giving her Claritin once a day only now. I noticed she has a "knot" on her belly so that gives me something else to worry about now.. she goes to the vet this friday to get tested for "Addison's disease" and the vet is going to keep her 1/2 the day to get a good reading on her blood pressure. I still worry leaving her alone all day and we don't have anyone we know that can come and check on her during the day. We are in TX and our whole family is in OH. I do not see our neighbors much and they work all day too so it's not like I have anyone to come and check on her. My problem is I am wracking my brain trying to figure out what happened to her Sunday night... was it a seizure or did she just faint? and I keep re-living watching the way she fell to the ground. I just cannot get it out of my head. It scared me so bad. I know that she is a "dog" and one day she will pass away. but she is only going to be 10 in Dec. I try not to worry about her so much but everyday i just cannot get home fast enough to her. She is my little angel and I love her so much! I never imagined I could let a "dog" into my heart so deep the way I have done with my 2 girls. I had to take a break and stop researching on line. I have been driving myself (and my husband) crazy. :-) As long as she is up and runnning around like a little crazy girl- I am ok. when she sleeps next to me I keep checking on her though. She is my litte angel and we will do whatever it takes to make her well. we are struggling with the vet bills but it doesn't matter. if I have to open a charge card to pay for her vet bills then I will do it. Some people I work with think we are crazy to spend so much on a "dog". I decided to stop sharing with them. they do not understand. I had one lady tell me to go and have her put to sleep now- while she is not suffering. Yeah like that's going to happen. Not a chance. I am not giving up on her. If she was suffering then that would be different. But she is not suffering at all. You can't even tell anything is going on with her protein loss or anything. I am currently researching raw food because I still believe it is the best for them. I am having a hard time convincing my husband. I also want to make sure her kidneys can handle the protein in raw. I have heard that the quality of protein in the raw food is the best for them. But bc of her kidneys not filtering properly I am nervous to start her on the raw. Hopefully we will find something out soon. Otherwise I think we will end up taking her to a specialist. the vet already gave me some info on specialists in our area but she wants to run a few more tests this Friday. I will keep you all posted and Thank you so much for checking in on us. i do not know where i would be if it wasn't for yorkie talk. :-) luv & hugs! renee, sadie and samie xo |

| I just read your last post with tears in my eyes. I know so well how you feel. I cannot imagine my life without my girls. I love them not because they are "like" my children, they ARE my children.(And I DO have a "skinkid".) People who do not understand will call us nuts. Let them. We know what our babies have given us, their complete love, complete devotion. Why should we not give them the same precious gift they give to us? I read in these forums all the time of Mommies that will go to absolutely extraordinary lengths to help their babies when they are ill, will look anywhere and everywhere for a cure, will regard every little tiny step forward of an ailing furkid, like it's the most joyful event, because it is. So you keep on fighting for your precious Sadie - you know she would lay down her life for you if she could. I just wish I had the knowledge to help her and you, so instead I send you hugs, Lauren
