Do you allow people to pick up your Yorkie?

Thanks, I think she's pretty cute but what mommy doesn't love her baby and think it's the prettiest? I have other pictures of her in my pic album but seems I don't know what I'm doing.
They show up in one place but don't think their visible in another even though I've checked share?

Well as for children, I will never let another child pick up or hold either of mine ever again. We were at a dog park and a little girl ask to hold Hot Rod and her mother was standing right there not saying a word but obviously wanting her daughter to hold him. No sooner did I place Hot Rod in her arms, she just open her arms up and let him fall. Arghhhh! Fortunately he was not hurt and it wasn't a high fall by any means-thankfully. And the mother never apologized or corrected the little girl, so no children ever again.

Maggie has only allowed a couple of people to pick her up and these were people that she knew. She usually runs when people try. Hot Rod won't let anyone pick him up. I usually tell strangers that they are so wiggly, which the truth. Only trusted friends and family are allowed to pick either of them up - as they know the fanatic that I am about them. lol

So I guess I fit into the rarely, must be mature adult category.

I was able to view them! Emmie is indeed adorable. You can also attach pictures to your comments by scrolling down to manage attachments. The trick is making sure the images aren't too big. 200kb is the max. I usually size them at 4x6".

I am the same way.My baby was dropped and ended up with a broken leg. Needed orthopedic surgery Rods placed in leg and then removed. I will not allow her to be picked up ever.

My yorkies are sooo much like people... I can tell when my babies want to be picked up. Bella will come up to me standing on her hine legs wagging that nubby little tail with those front legs just a going begging to be picked up! Bernie barks at me, Baxter puts his front paws on my legs, and Blazer nips at my toes. They let me know when they need attention and want to be picked up. Otherwise, they don't get picked up! Especially by someone that they don't know!

In fact, I train both mine to do what I call "avoidance".
If someone reaches down to pick them up, they will dodge,
run/retreat to a inaccessible area, and frequently will start
barking at the person.

If you think that's UNsociable, so be it !
But, with that, I'm a little more confident that they'll be there
for me to pick up later.

I have a command (a whistle) which disarms their retreat, or
if I hand someone (Groomer/Vet) one of them, then they don't
reject the person.

Furthermore, I encourage a high degree of territorial awareness,
nobody/nothing comes on the property or toward the house,
without me being VERY aware of it, because of their alertness.
They both are generously praised, each time they alarm...
for the right reason.

Dogs don't have to be big, or vicious (attack)
to be a good Guard Dog.

Our kids are early 20's so we don't have small children. Once a person sits down, the dogs sit by our guests. They can't usually be caught by someone standing, especially a child.
The other day a 23yo friend of my son picked up my littlest girl, he was holding her a foot off the ground and she was flailing, I reached over and grabbed her. He said my son had told him that picking her up would stop her from barking. Just to say, even an adult doesn't always know how to handle a wiggly little dog.

I know My friends constantly threaten to hide them and steal them away. We do a puppy count as soon as they leave

I don't like people picking Teddie up, save the family and my best pal. Teddie doesn't like being held a lot, so he wiggles, and he is rather slippery when he wiggles. I'd hate to have a child pick him up and have him wiggle free and drop. Even an adult has to be pretty quick on the draw with him. Teddie is a little lover, he will go and love on anyone so people can just leave him be because of it.

Ooh, I think I like the avoidance thing! It would be nice not to have to worry about it if I'm not directly supervising. I know at gatherings and bbq's, I generally put my Yorkies away because if I don't, inevitably, I'll look around and see somebody carrying one around.

I would worry a little bit about the avoidance command if they ever happened to escape and someone was trying to help capture them. Then again, if they escape, you've already rolled the dice on their ability to survive.

IF someone was trying to help recover them...
Then you probably wouldn't mind giving the "disarm" code
you personally use, to get them to come to you.

Otherwise, IF you've done a good job in getting them to
do avoidance, they will at least be free footed, and not
in someone's house or arms. That may extend your search,
but, as long as you KNEW they weren't stashed somewhere.

I just reread your comment, and...

You realize your sorta making your dogs ANTIsocial, but, I'd rather
have it that way, than take the chance of loosing them because
they were such friendly little guys.

This is probably NOT going to set well with some of "our" friends,
who might think they are exceptions.

UMM, sorry about that guys, I don't trust you either !

So, if I were you, I'd still put them up during those Socials
just so your friends wouldn't get all bent from being rejected.
