| Picking up the tab My brother and I agreed to take our dad out for a nice steak dinner. We've never taken him out to dinner before and we are in our 30s, sad huh? Well my dad now is trying to get us to let him pay. We are totally fine with picking up the tab. My bro's gf is going and my dad's gf is also going. We are fine with paying for them. What to do??? Should I talk to the restaurant and make arrangements ahead of time (it's tonight!) or should I threaten that if he pays I won't go? Or talk to the server or what? I do NOT want him to pay. He says it was just the thought that was good enough and that we don't have to pay bc he says it's going to be too expensive and we don't have money, which is no longer true.

| I would either talk to the waiter, or call ahead and maybe purchase a GC over the phone? Then you can always argue that you have this GC and need to use it What I usually do (or have had done for me) is to suggest that whoever is being treated just leave the tip instead. Makes them (or me) feel like a contribution was made.

| I would talk to the waiter .. Ask that he bill not be brought to the table when y'all are done..that you will take care of it. When it is time to pay just excuse yourself to the restroom and pay the bill. That way it is a done deal!

| Talk to the manager or your waiter ahead of time & get the bill situation discreetly dealt with before sitting down. You might even call ahead, speak with the manager & ask how best to handle it so dad never gets his paws on the bill. Enjoy Dad!

| Yeah I'm gonna have to call them when they open at 4. I hope we can get one of the booths in the back, otherwise the other tables are all in an open area and if I were to talk with the server he could see. But the booths in the back are very popular. I don't think they take reservations either. =/

| Great! We got there before my dad and his gf so we gave our server a card to hang onto. He still kept saying that they wanted to pay, and that they sold a bunch of my bro's old ebay stuff at a yard sale so they would pay. They made $85. I laughed, that was not even going to put a dent into the bill for steak dinners for 5 people. Anyway, everyone loved the food, we all got ribeyes, and shared a calamari. My bro and I got Newcastles, yummy! This is my leftovers!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | OMG, that's what I was thinking! That was so sweet of you and your brother. Your dad reminds me of mine, it was hard for me when my boys started wanting to buy me things, I still feel really guilty. I guess a parent aways wants to be able to do more for their children.
