I would either talk to the waiter, or call ahead and maybe purchase a GC over the phone? Then you can always argue that you have this GC and need to use it
What I usually do (or have had done for me) is to suggest that whoever is being treated just leave the tip instead. Makes them (or me) feel like a contribution was made.
