We are considering a Rhodesian Ridgeback. We have found a great breeder and are now just deciding whether or not to commit. I've heard they're great with little dogs if raised with them and very protective of their families.

I love my german shepherd...as long as you socialize them while the big dog is a puppy, you shouldn't have any problems...The only thing I worry about, is not my shepherd hurting my little ones, but, maybe stepping on them, she's huge..

Aww I love Saints and Shepherds too...

This is going to be a HARD decision...with these bigger dogs does it help with temperament to have them spayed or neutered when they're really young?

I love the German Shepherd. They are so smart, loyal and just a good all round dog.

I would not get anything such as huskies that have a prey drive. My cousin's husky attacked his gfs yorkie. THe yorkie ended up being okay after several days at the vets, but it was a scary experience.

Why not go down to your local shelter and pick something out? There are TONS of big dogs (and puppies that will turn into Big dogs), that will die if not adopted. Its sad, but its reality too. Not all are mixes, many dogs in shelters are purebred. If you adopt an adult dog, esp from a rescue, they can tell you if the dog is good with other animals or not. If you want a lab, they are one of the most abundant dogs in the shelter.

I considered that, and I've been glancing at puppyfind here and there. I'm not completely opposed to it, but I just want a dog that I know what breeds they have in them so I can be a certain as possible that he/she will be good with the yorkies. I fell in LOVE with a shepherd/pit mix at a shelter one time, and I still regret I didn't get that puppy. I fostered her for a week and she was so sweet, but it just wasn't a time in my life I could've gotten her. I'm all for rescues, my mom has one, and my cat is a rescue.

I love big dogs and I have a 90 lb boxer who is the biggest sweetheart in the world. She gets along great with Chloe and Tink. But I do have to warn you, it is soooooo hard to keep a clean house with penny. She sheds alot and slobbers and tracks in so much dirt and leaves. And my furniture is really worn out and my upholstery is ruined to. I absoultely love her and wouldnt trade her for anythign in the world but keeping a clean house for more than a day is absolutely impossible! lol Sometimes I wish she was a little smaller.

lol that made me laugh...I mean to be honest, I really doubt a big dog will be much more destructive than these little monster I have running around here now!! Something about a big slobbering baby is just so appealing to me...lol...I know, crazy right?

As long as you have a backyard that has a lot of grasss and not so much dirt like I have, you should be okay. Everytime it rains (or snows like this week) when I let penny out to go potty she tracks in soooo much mud and I have to spend forever trying to wipe her down. And I practically have to put an area rug as a placemat under her food and water bowl becuase she slober so much . But you are right, slobbering big furbabys really are adorable. Especially dogs like Penny who have big puppy dog eyes and make adorable faces! I could do without the constant gas though, penny can fart up a storm!
I think you will make a great big dog mommy.
Since you dont mind the slobbering, I think you should get a boxer then, as they are my favorite bigger breed. They are so sweet and playful. Penny actually plays with Chloe and its the cutest thing I have ever seen. Penny also makes a great watchdog and even looks after Tess. She always lays at the couch and watches Tess while she is in her swing, its quite precious.

My yorkies don't like her that much but she doesn't care she just lets them bark at her because she will not hurt anything but she is already protective and she is 14 weeks old!!! BEAUTIFUL and such low maintence!!! NO SHEDDING like labs!!!! Labs are great they just shed ALOT! I would definatley recomend this breed to any and everyone!!!!! THey have eyes to kill for!!!! I vote for German Shepherds, too. My sister lost her wonderful rescue, Ben, a little over a year ago. What a sweet, gentle giant.

Here is poor Ben being used as a couch by one of her orphaned kittens. They decided Ben was a pretty good mommy substitute.

I second the Mastiff. I have a female Mastiff and she is the most gentlest and sweetest dog I have EVER had. She lets my Yorkies and Poodles lay on her and sleep. She would never hurt anyone, stranger or not, but just the size of her is intimidating. Plus, they are extremely easy to train.

I just posted pictures of her under "Spoiled Mastiff" and other pictures a while ago... I will try to dig up those threads for you...

Hey Nicki,

Just thought I would let you know my parents own a Huskey/Austrailian Shepherd mix who is 70 pounds and a Great Pyrenees who is 95 pounds. They are both great with my little yorkies Murphy and Mia and also have a yorkie sister of my moms that they live with.

Bailey is the GP and she is SOOOOOO ridiculously sweet and playful with my little Mia who is only 3 pounds. I am always over my moms with Murphy and Mia and they are like two peas in a pod. I am at work now so this is the only picture I have of the two dogs but I could show you many pictures of the GP and my Mia cuddled up together. The GP are truly GREAT dogs but do require some training on your part. As for a Guard dogs though...nothing is more powerful or makes a statement than a GP staring you in the face if you are not welcome. She has made it quite clear to many people at my mom and dads house that they are not welcome unless my parents let the people come in the door.

Good luck with your search. Here is a picture of them both so you can see...they even share the turkey dripping pans at thanksgiving with my two. : p
We live in Fl so my parent’s keep her shaved down that is why she has does not have a full coat like a normal GP.
