| It's so sad.... In addition to Zoe, we have a collie who is 10 1/2 years old now and she's been starting to have trouble getting around. The vet says she's got arthritis in her hind hips and it seems to be getting worse. She has fallen down the stairs twice this week and this morning I'm worried about her. When she falls, she doesn't go end over end, she just kinda slides down on her butt and she seems fine but I don't know what to do. I hate to make her sleep downstairs by herself but I'm getting worried that she's going to really get hurt one of these days. My husband and I are really getting worried. Losing her would be so hard on the kids. and us too. She's just getting old and I feel so bad for her. I'm getting myself all worked up her as if she's already gone. I must have hormone issues or something. |

| They say the life expectancy for collies is 10-12 years. She is really in good shape other than this one thing so I was hoping she would last a lot longer than that! I just envision us having to carry her upstairs and outside to go potty. I'm just emotional today for some reason. But yes, I'm gonna call the vet this morning and ask if there is anything they can give her. I'm thinking maybe it's worse now that it's getting cold here? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I thnk the vet will have something to help her. My pom is 10 1/2 and has several major illnesses and I had thought she would last until she was at least 15. It is so sad to see them age. I hope they can give her something to make her arthritis better.

| Can you gate her downstairs. I know it would be hard but atleast she'd be safe.

| Oh I'm sorry, i've been having some issues with Abby too. Her back legs giving out. She was a rescue and I'm thinking she's older then the vet says. I'm sorry, it's hard and sad, i know how you feel.

| (((tjdmom))) Have you tried any supplements to help her out with her hips? Its so sad watching our furbabies get old and we have to face the fact that they aren't immortal.

| Yes, I give her glucosamine and she is on a senior diet which the vet recommended. I think part of this too is because she was always really underweight until we got Zoe (she now eats her food thinking that if she doesn't, Zoe will) and now she isn't over weight, she just looks really healthy but I think the extra weight puts a strain on her too but I don't want her to loose weight either. I left a lengthy message for the vet - they said she was in surgery but she didn't call me back. But she seems fine now poor girl. I guess it sucks to get old.... does anyone know if a heating pad would help with it or one of those warming pads that someone on here makes? |

Donating YT 11K Club Member | I'm sorry It's a sad thing to see them go thru that! I had a Cavalier that also got arthritis and was so bad we had to put him to sleep. He was only 8 yrs old. He would drag his back legs around and looked to be in pain. I would suggest massaging her legs and body, and keeping her very warm, especially now in the winter, use a heating pad.
