I had only been in the Navy for 6 months. I was in A-school, where they teach you the job you are going to do after bookcamp. We were supposed to graduate the next day so we had nothing to do in class. We were all sitting at the desk talking when our class leader walked in and told us a plane hit the world trade center and all of the planes are grounded. We had no idea what was actually happening. We thought it was a small, personal plane that had it and and only a few people had probably died. We couldn't understand why they grounded all of the flights. Many of my classmates had plane tickets for the next day and were upset that they weren't going to be able to fly home. I was upset because I wouldn't be able to see my then boyfriend. Now I feel bad at how selfish we were. There were a couple classes that got to watch tv, but we never did.
Finally they told us to leave the building and go straight to our barracks room.
We were not allowed to call home or anything. They inspected our things and looked in our closets. After they left a snuck a phone call in and called my mom, but she doesn't watch much tv and had to turn it on. I called my boyfriend and said to him that I was upset his plane ticket got cancelled. He got mad and hung up on me. But I still had no idea the magnatude of what was going on. Finally they told us we could leave our rooms and we all gathered downstairs to watch the only tv and I finally found out how big of a deal this was and called my boyfriend back and everyone in my family.
The post about a naval base shutting down is right. It rarely happens. There were no cars on the streets. They told us if we weren't walking in groups of 3 or more we would be arrested. We had to leave our uniform on all day. Then we were given our speech the next day. A girl was crying frantically. She had said that she joined the military for the free college and she didn't expect us to actually really ever go to war. When you join the military there is a possiblity that this will happen. Joining for college is joining for the wrong reason. We were the future of the military and this is what we're really here for. I knew from that day forward the United States and it's military would never be the same.

I was on my way to a job interview. And when I got the place where I interviewed they had a TV on in the lobby; the receptionist and I were the only ones watching at this point because no one else in the building had heard that anything was going on yet. . .

I was at work. We did not have a TV there, and the internet was swamped so we couldn't really get much news. I pretty much worked a normal day, but I was aware all the time that something really terrible had happened.

I live in NYC. That sad day I was home sleeping. My sister was visiting from Georgia. My husband called me and told me to turn the TV on. I ran to wake up my sister and her husband. I that time we thought was a small plane that hit the first tower, when we saw the second plane hit the second tower. We knew then was an attack. My sister was living very close to the base so she was so scared because her kids were home with her husband's mom. We were in shock, we couldn't believe what was happening. I could see the smoke from my apt bldg. My husband boss told he can go home, so he ran to my son school to pick him up. We will never forget that day.
My prayers for those affected by that horrible tragedy. Hugs.

I was on my way to work and heard about it on the radio, it still haunts me... my next door neighbor's Husband just happened to be in NY for a meeting in the WTC, he thought that he would be just fine, called his wife and told her so, he stayed put and the building colapsed ontop of him. It was months before they found him. The memorial service here for him was unbelieveable! There were police at every door to keep the media out so that his family could have a peaceful ceremony.

I was teaching a class, when all of a sudden there was chaos in the halls and all the teachers were standing in their doorways on the phone. It was a scary day! Parents were coming in like crazy to pick up their kids!

PS. Baby was born on 9/11/2005

I was at home in Huntington Beach, Ca. I was getting ready for work, listening to Howard Stern. I turned on the t.v. briefly that morning, but mostly was glued to the radio. For days, I would sit in my room and watch the footage at night. I must have cried for 7 days straight. My favorite time was riding in my car down the street. People would be waving American Flags and cars would have honking horns blowing. It was an incredibly sad time, but also a time when America pulled together.

i was at work in philadelphia. a coworker came off break and told me a plane hit one of the twin towers. by the time i ran to the lounge to the tv i saw the second plane hit. i work in transportation and immediately everything in our office went insane. phones were ringing off the hook. people were desperate. the rumor was a fourth plane and noone knew where it was headed. when i left and got on I-95 traffic was insane. cell phones were not working and traffic was stopped. people were driving on the shoulders and in the median to get across the bridges to nj. i put on howard stern. i knew he would report the truth and not some mainstream media crap. peolpe were clearing out of philadelphia like maniacs. we felt like the next target. i admit i drove my suv down the shoulder too to get to the bridge back to jersey. there was another rumor the bridges were going to be closed to vehicals. i went to my mom's house and sat and stared at the tv with friends. my mom's fiance' is an executive with the nypd and was in the middle. tension was high. i couldn't stop thinking about all those people who were suffering. we were scared of more attacks and took off to my mom's house at the shore. we sat looking out at navy vessells lining up along the shoreline. it was really creepy. we forgot the house was next to the navy base and it was alarming to hear the military aircraft overhead. they just kept circling. in the aftermath my mom's fiance' was okay. he worked at the wtc site for over a year. the stories were awful. the things he saw. the voices that haunt. we went to the concert for ny shortly after. we were seating with firemen. they were in the building. we cried together. i hugged a young firefighter. he was haunted by people he didn't save. faces that didn't survive. he couldn't sleep remebering falling people and body parts scattered like bugs. now, the talk is antidepressants and cancer treatment for wtc workers. they are mistreated and not taken care of. these people are forgotten heros. the site is a tourist attraction. and the a******* that did it are not held accountable. we need to remember and prepare. i work in transportation and we are reminded everyday it can happen again. memo after memo of security and prevention. the american public wanders around unprepared and the biggest target of terror in the world. the media reports biased crap. the new 9/11 movie should be a wake up call and a remeberance. even though it may be a little insensitive that its so soon after.

Default Shocking news!!!!

I was getting ready for work and watching the news on tv. At first just thought it was a pilot who had crashed into the building on accident and was so shocked to see the other plane crash live! It was so unbelivable!!

I also remember the Challenger blowing up. Again I was getting ready for work that day. (I worked the 1 to 9 shift) and was watching it in the late morning. Again I was so shocked!!

The Waco news of the cult was shocking too.

I live just outside of Littleton and I remember being at work hearing about the Columbine tradegy and turning on the TV at work and watching it. I work right next door to a hospital and saw lots of reporters, cars, people running over there. That one was to close for comfort!!

We were getting ready for work (I worked for BofA and DH at a mortgage company) Hubby always watched the news in the am and as soon as he turned on the tv the 1st plane hit. We called my parents and watched the 2nd hit. I called the bank and they said to take the day off because they were forced to close. We drove hubby to work and found out they were taking a week off. As it turned out both of our companies had offices in the building.
BofA lost 7 people and his company lost 2. Very sad day.
Hubby travels ALOT (3 weeks each month) and I am always worried about him. Now that we have kids it makes it even harder. We now talk more on the phone when he travels than when he is home.
Blessings to all the familys and friends who lost a loved one.

I was on my way to work, I was an operations manager for a large bank. I worked in a high rise building and they closed it down. NEVER saw tv coverage, only heard the news on the radio. My husband called me and told me what was going on. I never saw or spoke to him until the next day. At work we had to go into disaster mode, calling in 15 of my top operators, we rented a van and had to move our operations to Massachusetts. On our way down the highway, not one single tractor trailer truck was on the road. At around midnight went outside for a break, standing looking up at the sky, nothing, total silence, then all of a sudden Air Force planes were over head, we were close to Logan Airport..Very scary.. On our way back to NH,(2:30am) again on the highway, we were the only vehicle on the road. Once we got back into town, to drop of our staff, a truck with 4 teen agers in it went by us. They had the largest American Flag waving and God Bless America blasting, I was never so proud of those kids, we all just stood there and watched as they proceeded up and down the main road. I am an American by choice, born in Scotland, I am proud to say this country is mine. God Bless our Troops who serve and protect us everyday, and who sacrificed their lives for us to live in a country built on freedom. I will never forget Sept. 11th.

I am so sorry for those who have lost loved ones to this tragic, senseless act.

I was in a chat program (paltalk.com) that morning, when someone in the room said an airplane just hit a Twin Tower in NYC. I ran to the television, and watched as the second plane crash into the second Tower. I was just numb. It was so surrealistic. I dialed my sister in Arkansas: "Are you watching the news?" I asked. "What? Israel?" she responded, as she moved to turn on her set. "No.......US!" I whispered. We just sat there in shock crying together.
