| Calling all Teachers! So..here's the deal. I am about to graduate this summer with my BA in English and I want to teach high school english. There is this year long program I am applying to so I can get my certification. However, when I was talking to the program coordinator, she said that I might be able to find a job as a teacher on a provisional status since I dont have my certification yet. I found a high school in the area where I will be moving to that's looking for an English teacher..so how do I go about applying as a provisional teacher? Anyone have any experience with this type of stuff? Thanks in advance!

| I was a high school science teacher. I loved it! I just retired, which I also love, but working with high school age students is so wonderful. I still teach English at a community college nearby. That's my favorite subject to teach. You're just going to love it. In NYC, you go to the school in your power suit, ask to see the principal, and, if you get to see her/him talk yourself up and provide a glowing upbeat resume. If the principal isn't in, try to make an appointment. Best case scenario - see the principal in person. Mid case scenario - talk to the AP, especially if the English Dept. has its' own AP. Worst case scenario - if you absolutely can't get to see anyone - leave your resume and call the following week. I would do it soon before the school year is over. Good luck and keep us posted.

| Provisional Certification in the state of Georgia You did not say which state you will be living in after you move. If you were staying in Georgia you would apply to the Georgia Department of Education...Certification and Records Division. You can find the address on line. I know it is in Atlanta. They will then look at your credentials and determine that you can get a provisional certification. I believe a provisional certification is good for one year and you have to be working toward getting a regular certification. There are a few rules that apply. When you have met the requirements for a regular certificate it will be changed. For a job you apply to your local Board of Education in the city you are wishing to teach. I retired from public schools in Georgia three years ago after 34 years. I am now teaching PreK. I am in the process right now of renewing my certification. Good luck with getting certified and with your teaching career. Belinda |
