| Help! cheerleader in pain! is there a doctor in the house? Well im the co-captain of my schools cheer leading squad. Its all ive ever known, its the only sport ive ever done, i absolutely adore it and its the social standing im used to, all my friends are on the squad. Problem, ive bruised & sprained every part of my body and have broken/hurt my wrists, shoulder, knees, ankles ect.. countless times. My mother pretty much told me that if i had 1 more injury, she'd pull me out of the squad. well im a flyer (girl they throw up in the air) and i was up there and i was supposed to do 1 flip in the air, pretty simple, much easier that most of the stuff i do, but something went wrong with my basers and i hit the ground, hard. i got up and continued the routine, but my ankle has been KILLING me ever since then. i cant tell my mom, that isnt even an option, i dont think its broken, it just really hurts, its probably just a sprain. sometimes i wonder why i do this, but i really cant imagine my life without it, 5 hour practices & being thrown into the air might not seem like fun for most people, but its my life. i had practice this morning, and i functioned close to normal, i even landed my layout with all the back handsprings, but i did it in ALOT of pain . what should i do? i dont have practice tomorow so should i just stay off it and hope it heals? |

| Maybe you should wear an ankle brace to give you some extra support until you're feeling better.

| Tell your Mom and take care of your body. Your body has to last you a long time. Your highschool social is very fleeting. It won't be the end of the world. |

| Yes, of course this is the smart thing to do, i know that. But my mother is crazy, she meens it, she will take me off the squad. im the co-captain, i worked hard for it, i love what i do, and i dont know what id do without out it. IT IS MY LIFE. i know its probably very hard to understand & i must seem like a crazy hormone enraged teen but really, its a big deal. its not about my social standing, its not even about my friends, its that i love it and i have absolutly no idea what id do without it. |

| Jacky it is important to take care of yourself. That should be #1 on the list. Can you have the school nurse check it out to make sure you haven't broken anything? If not you really have to tell Mom. It really should be checked out. Even spains can be very painfull and pulled ligaments and muscels as well. I also love cheerleading and think it is important to be connected in school with some sort of sport. I coached for 9years middle school and high school. My granddaughter was a flyer the last two years of high school. You can get some pretty bad injuries for sure. Your mom is just worried for you. I understand your love for the sport but please discuss this with her. I hope nothing is broken. There are so many tiny bones in our feet that you wouln't really know if one was broken without an x-ray. Sprains also at times can be worse then a break. Hopefully it is just bruised. Good luck. |

| I was a cheerleader too in high school and so I sympathize with you. Rest up until the next practice, but if you are still in pain, bite the bullet and mention it. You could have an injury that could have long lasting effects if it worsens. Off subject, but isn't the type toss you described illegal except for at the college level? |

| Don't you have a TRAINER at the school. My daughters squad has a trainer for injuries. HMM Ok .. this is ONLY what I would do in your situation but you can take it for what it's worth and this is NOT advice I would tell mom I hurt it falling down the steps or something.

| Oh Jacky! I was a cheerleader all through high school and in college and I completely understand what you are going through. You need some support on that ankle and they make some pretty cool ankle wraps these days. I was a base and my question is HOW did they make that mistake? I'm so sorry (I would have caught ya). Take care of yourself now so you can continue to cheer |

| I had a similar incident. My baser was a guy, and he was too busy looking up my skirt to focus on the whole "catching" thing... whoever thinks all those guys are gay, you are wayyy off. lol |

| I've never been a cheerleader, but as a fitness professional have also had lots of injuries. The rule of thumb is RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. A Motrin would probably help with inflammation and pain as well. If you don't feel better tomorrow, I would not practice - tell your coach and ask to see the trainer (if your school has one). I'm not advocating lying, but If you think you need to see a doctor, you might just tell your mom it hurts and you don't know why as you don't remember doing anything to it. I've had lots of injuries that I can't explain......

| I'm don't want to just promote lying to your mom...but I have to agree with everyone else here...it that's what it comes to for you to get the med attention you need... |

| wear an ankle brace go to your trainer to have it checked out and get it wrapped sit out on the tumbling and stunting for a day or two and you'll be fine. i cheered since i was five years old up to my senior year in high school, i know your pain .. but i would just go to the trainer and eventually you will heal. now if it continues to be a bother i would tell your parent, i mean you state that cheerleading is your life .. you don't want to compete with a unhealed body part!
