No, his is not aspergers his, is Autism Spectrum Disorder. My niece has aspergers and she can get really biligerent and loud and just goes absolutely nuts if things are too loud she gets overloaded very quickly. She is 12 I think they just started school I'm not sure how well she is doing right now. That's tough to have been at 8 different schools. Hopefully this one will be the perfect fit. I will keep my fingers crossed. What kinds of therapy does you brother get? Ethan doesn't get any other than speech at school now. Thank goodness. We did the therapy thing for 4 or 5 years. We've been very lucky the county we live in is the best county in the state as far as special needs goes they have a great program in the public school system.

you mean my brother or my son (i'm sorry) my brother has aspergers but he wasnt diagnosed until he was 18 and then he moved out to california and has a script to smoke pot i'm not really sure how thats working for him but i wont be telling my son about his uncles method of dealing lol my son has been involved with therapy/counseling/special ed classes/small ratio classes 3 teachers to 5 students up until now - he had a breakdown in the spring and was hosptilized - they just released him 2wks ago (from march!) but now he is in a residential treatment center put out by the childrens mental hospital here... he will be there until january or february of 2007 learning about how to deal with his disorders/disabilities/needs i cried and still do its so hard... but honestly he is happy there and doing the work he needs to while he is still young and impressionable enough to maybe make a real difference... and he IS better this was what was recommended a year ago but i just couldnt do it and said no - but then he fell apart and we no longer had a choice in the meantime i see him all the time and participate in his social skills groups and family counseling and everything and i am renovating so when he comes home he will have his own room (he used to share w/his brother) because he can't handle the roommate situation the residential treatment is everything i never thought it would be and i am so lucky... its a beautiful place that looks and feels like home... in the country (about 20min from home) and his doctor and mental health workers and nurses live there too... and work w/him every single day there are 8 kids total and its a long term program and all about family so we are always there and learning too and then the goal is he comes home and stays home and has the skills and tools to stay there - no more multiple schools and no more hospitalizations - just home forever

I'm sorry I wasn't sure which was which. It sounds like your son is doing very well. I know you hate him not being with you all the time. At least you found a great place for him and you know he is getting exactly what he needs. I wish you and him all the best. I'm sure there are places like that here I just never had to look into them. We are very lucky Ethan is extremely high functioning. He just made himself some choc milk while I was typing this he also fixes his own bologna sandwiches and popcorn(microwave) and most of the time gets his own drinks and just about anything else. Good Luck and please if you don't mind keep me posted as to how you son is doing.

Sorry I didn't see this post untile after I replied to the other one. Really the only thing he is doing right now is speech in school. He is taking free swimming lessons for special needs children at one of the Y's here. It is a 45 min drive but heck swimming lessons aren't cheap. He absolutely loves it. So that makes all the difference in the world. We are in a great place, we live in the Atlanta metro area. So, we have had lots of resources at our fingertips. We haven't had to use them much, we have been very lucky. Dogs are great therapy aren't they. My two love Ethan and they get him up out of bed in the mornings to get him ready for school, and they greet him when he comes home in the afternoons.

You most definitely have to focus on the good days. My son loves to read. He has carried books around from the time he could walk. I think that he was a very early reader and we just didn't know it. He is your typical 10 year old little boy loves the computer and video games, loves to go on hikes, camping, swimming and a lot of other normal little boy stuff. I tell my husband all the time that we are lucky we have a happy, healthy little boy and I'm always reminded of that fact when I see other kids that are in wheelchairs and have other disabilities that can be seen.

| My older 3 go back the 23rd. It makes me sad. I wish I had the time and energy to homeschool them. Steven is going into 5th, Kaitlyn into 2nd and Andrew into first.

I just don't know if I would have the patience to homeschool. A good friend of mine homeschools her daughter.

| With a 2yr. old and a 5 month old, I just don't feel like I could do it justice. However, our school is very small. There are only 8 students in the entire first grade! The 2nd grade has 12 and the 5th has 16. It's the biggest class in the grade school! With the class sizes so small, I feel like the kids get a lot of personal attention. Plus, we live in the country and my kids don't get to see their town friends very often, so they enjoy getting to see their friends.

and its true...about the dogs being great therapy.... she has really helped me esp through this time and provided a life-long friend for my older more timid son (he has had a tuff time with all this) and my daughter is growing up with her and she is learning to be gentle and kind to animals from jump which is such an important lesson... i am fortunate that my son that is in the residential treatment ctr has a great respect for nature and all creatures so that is thankfully one issue i dont have to worry about when he comes home
