Gina, my Dad passed away on June 6th of this year from smoking. He died of COPD which had weakend his heart. Please find the strength to fight the urge to smoke. My Dad struggled every day for a good breath. He had to lug around an oxygen bottle to go anywhere and even then he only could walk short distances before he ran out of breath. That's not how you want to live your life. You are a strong person and you want to live a long and healthy life. Fight the urge! Hang in there! You CAN do it!!!

My dad too died from smoking. First he had esophageal cancer, then they removed his larnyx and he had to talk with a little hand held thing that made his voice sound like a robot and then he developed lung cancer, and fluid built up around his lungs and heart & the doctors said because of smoking he literally drowned in his own body fluids.

Please don't smoke ever again.

Did you ever try the patch? My mom was a HEAVY smoker, 3-4 packs a day. She quit with the patch. :thumbup:

My husband has the same thing your dad had...I'm so sorry to hear you lost him.

doortego...I'm sorry about your dad too.

I watch my husband struggle every day...he is now at 18% lung Capacity - which is very very bad. :( I have to check him every morning to make sure he's still breathing. I already know he won't live long like this - but he's only 57 and it's really hard to accept it.

I'm so sorry Villette and everyone else who has lost someone to smoking. I can only imagine how tough it is for you. I had to watch BOTH of my grandparents die from smoking. It's tough....:(

it really IS hard watching...you feel like you're on a deathwatch. I hate talking about it - but it is important for anyone who smokes to watch for the signs of COPD....it creeps up on people and most make the mistake of NOT QUITTING the ciggies.

My husband was told he had asthma (he didn't) - and now - it's too late for him -

The severe damage that was done cannot be treated - and the suffering is tremendous. I've never heard him talk about dying till the other day - he was actually wishing he could just get it over with because he struggles so much to get a breath. He's on a transplant list but he won't live to receive it....even if we COULD afford it...which we can't.

It's a nasty soul-sucking disease.

Villette, I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Is he on the list for lung transplant?

I have asthma and it is really tough. I can only imagine how much more difficult breathing is for someone who has COPD. I guess in a way I am lucky I have asthma...that is the only reason I never started smoking in the first place. God has a funny way of dealing with things, doesn't he?

Thanks and yes - he's on the list but won't live to see it happen. There's a 2 year wait period.

I didn't mean to post and be depressing (though I depressed my own self worse actually seeing it in writing) :( ...I just wanted to share that the signs of Lung Diseases can manifest themselves as asthma 0r bronchitis - So if anyone IS short of breath - get an ex-ray asap.

My hubby is studying to be a transplant surgeon. Tell your hubby to hang in there and my hubby will give him new lungs for free. ;)

I know how painful it must be, but your warning on this forum will probably save someones life. Thank you for sharing your story, Villette. It really makes us reflect on how precious life is.

thanks and you're awesome to say that - at this stage that IS the only thing that would save his life.

and all the best to your husband - he's entering a very important field - good for him :thumbup: - maybe he'll be the one to make changes in our system because as of right now - it sucks.

Oh, I agree...it sux. Maybe he will be able to make some changes. He is a very compassionate and humble person, not pompous like a lot of doctors and surgeons. Maybe he'll be able to do some great things with the system.

When I was quitting, I would take deep deep breaths and then hold them as long as I could. It gave me an oxygen high. Not as great as nicotine. LOL But it did help, and cleaned all that junk out of my lungs at the same time.
