| Macbook battery question I think my Macbook battery is swollen causing problems with the tracking pad (read this in the Apple forums). Everything works fine if I put the laptop on a soft surface or on my lap, or if I tilt the machine at a 45 degree angle. Or debris got into the crevices of the tracking pad. My question: if the battery is swollen and needs to be replaced, is there any risk of further damage to the computer? It might be awhile before I can get to the nearest Apple store.

| Any particular reason for going to the store instead of buying online? Personally, I'd replace it right away as I'd fear the battery could leak at any time in that condition. Not to mention it's a fire hazard. |

With my Toshiba laptop, the battery just pops off the bottom. No need to open the case.

| Can you post a picture? Also provide model #? Does the sticker say something like "void warranty if removed"? |

| I haven't opened up my machine. Saw the sticker in a YouTube video of someone replacing the battery. Found this in Apple's documentation for my Mackbook Pro: Quote:

| Thank you Magnus and Maxdog. I found some more articles and photos, and I am confident now that my battery is okay. My laptop case is not distorted in any way, and the System Report shows that battery is "healthy." I did learn that I need to discharge the battery fully more often. Leaving it plugged in, charging, as much as I do is bad for it. The good news is that my tracking pad is also coming back. I think maybe I got debris or a drop of liquid in it. The pointer works fine again, and the clicking is coming back in one corner of the pad.

| That's great! Considering how expensive those things are, glad you didn't have to spend more money on it. But I would like to say one more time, if at any point you think the battery is swollen or there's any problem with the battery, it's not a good idea to keep using. Happy surfing!!!!!!! |

| Thank you for the warning. I will keep an eye on the laptop. Any signs of distortion of the case, I'll head for the Apple store.

| This is just my own curiosity... Why did you get a macbook? You used Toshiba before... Do you prefer Apple products? Find it easier to use? |

| I had a battery in an older MacBook that did the swelling thing. Took it to the Apple Store to show it to them and see what a new one would cost and they replaced it for free. But it was clearly swollen.

Both are over 3 years old and I hate to think that it is almost time to replace them.

| That was nice of them to replace the battery for free. When I googled photos of swollen Macbook batteries, they were as you describe yours -- clearly swollen.
