Ooops, already scanned. But - gulp - so far so good I think.

What the heck IS safe mode and why is it good? I never have understood it! Can you explain what it is to me?

When you start your pc, before the log in screen, you should see an option to start in safe mode by pressing F8 or F12, it depends on what brand you have. This is a mode just starts your Windows with limited set of files and drivers. It's usually used as a "troubleshooting" for when your windows isn't working correctly.

Also, there are rare times where your registry might need to be cleaned up. You can find all sorts of free registry clean up programs.

Was scared to death I'd get some virus or malware but my Norton kept all safe.

With Internet Security, anytime you download anything, Norton checks out the download and give you a little warning report before the install so you will know if it is safe. This message I was getting this morning is like that - but I wasn't knowingly and voluntarily downloading anything from this site as far as I knew. If the download were dangerous, Norton would quarantine it or notify me of the intrusion attempt but its warning was just saying it can't find anything on this file so it won't let it run after the download took place. But it's only on the YT website that I keep getting the warning of the download and it's listed as a low-level and safe but unknown. But I've never gotten this kind of repetitive warning before and was just wondering if anyone else was seeing it.

I'd rather bang my head into the wall over and over than call Norton but I think I will if I keep getting that odd warning. Thankfully I haven't gotten it since I posted this thread.
Maybe mine has more than I thought, it was about $100. They let me know whenever they perform anything I should know about immediately.

Just made me think, it's about time for me to renew. I'm sure they will let me know.

Good grief, yes, go renew right now. If a virus ever shuts your computer down and you can't get it to restart again without reshutting itself down each time, it's the worst! I clicked on one of those entertainment websites and boom, my computer began going crazy within just a few minutes, throwing up about 80 different windows and shut down, never to come back without reshutting down itself down immediately as it was trying to start up. I couldn't even get it into Safe Mode, which I knew I needed to try to do, though I never know what to do in that mode.

A friend of my sons was able to use something of his to bypass something or the other and get it up, run virus/malware/etc. and he's the one who put Malwarebytes on it, which I used once regularly I got it back again. But eventually that computer ran out of space with all my audio books and photos on it and I had to get my new laptop. It came with Norton Antivirus on it for a free trial but I bought the Internet Security package at the computer store and put it on immediately.

I have my Norton on auto-renew so that it's automatically renewed each year. Once I got their Internet Security program, no more viruses or vicious malware has gotten into my computer and I never have to worry about going on any website. I think it's just about $55.00 or so yearly and from the research I did online, well worth the extra protection it gives over just the regular antivirus program.

Yeah that would probably be if your computer is really messing up. Scanning in normally is probably fine.

A few weeks back I scanned my dudes computer with Malwarebytes and it found over 100 threats that his antivirus wasn't picking up. I did it because I noticed his computer was lagging. But now it's running fine.

I've never paid for any antivirus. I use microsoft security essentials with malwarebytes and my computer has never crashed in 5+ years and I use my computer for EVERYTHING. To make money, some classes, fun... everything. Still runs really good.

Christinee that sounded so good, I was ready to sign up after my Norton ran out. This is what it said.

Important: After April 8, 2014, Microsoft will be retiring technical support for Windows XP, including security updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on this date. If you continue to use Windows XP, your computer might become more vulnerable to security and virus risks. Learn more about end of support for Windows XP.

As you can see this was posted just a couple days ago about what some think will be happening in 2015. Darn someone is going to be making a good lot of money and we know who. I rather liked 8 but it looks like many didn't. What I quoted also has info on Microsoft essentials

Windows 9 coming in 2015, will try its hardest to distance itself from the Windows 8 train wreck | ExtremeTech

Except for Java, I like to stay current to keep my computer running like I want so I am on Microsoft 8..................wrong move because if one is on 7 you can easily switch to 8.1 Bet more have never changed and still on 7, they know the people who switch when thinking something better will come available will also purchase the 8.1 ??? so is that a second train wreck?

In the first paragraph above, I meant to say 'Microsoft Security Essentials' not just Microsoft Essentials.

I'm getting professional advice.

Yes, I've heard that too. I have Windows 8 and before that I had Window 7, so I am still in the green zone. but I did hear they were letting go of support for Windows XP. Yep, it's just another way to make you buy an upgrade I am sure. Sucks.

But if you do decide to go with another antivirus, make sure you remove norton with their Norton removal tool. Norton is not an easy program to get out of your computer. I worked in tech support dealing with this stuff for a couple years.

I have windows 8 as well and I am leaning towards renewing with Norton but I have not been able to speak with my friend yet who is on a business trip and don't want to bother him until he gets home. It's not a rush thing and Norton would never let it lapse, if they did their reputation would be

If I sound confused, I am. I think I'll check on Norton 2014 rates. It's not going to be the cheapest I go for, it's just I want to see what I have to be prepared for.....darn I wish my Norton wasn't renewing until after April 8.

I was getting renewal dates mixed up with Netflix renewal, don't ever get old.

I logged into my Norton account to see how many days I had left and when I ordered it last time and, it was on April 17, 2013.

No, I didn't remember my password for Norton, I wrote it down.
