| Yes, you can get a supplement. Unfortunately most insurance companies will not pay for this type procedure unless your doctor will declare your weight to be "life altering/threatening." Hope that helps...Good Luck! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I worked in Group health Insurance for 33 years and we would pay for gastric stapling if an Insured was 100 lbs overweight AND had life threatening illness, such as heart, diabetes etc. A supplemental policy would be more like an individual policy and either not covered or ridered out, not to mention they are expensive. You could look for an agent that may be able to help you out.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | This is unreal - someone I know is just asking about this - She was getting the lapband too - and been to the doctor and everything with the surgery scheduled ....Then she just found out today... after she was all psyched ...that insurance won't pay she had even checked with the insurance company before making the appointment - I think with the crazy prices of insurance something like this SHOULD be covered - I don't understand the reasoning behind insurance companies that's for sure - dsrjrr....I hope you get answers ...sounds like you need to fight this and maybe get the doctors to claim it for health reasons - I know some people have had cosmetic surgeries done - my husand had his eyes done - they claimed he needed the surgery for vision purposes and they very reluctently gave in - this was back when I had insurance thru Aetna...but they did pay after we kept on them GOOD LUCK !!! I would love to see more answers here for my friend too....she's going thru this same problem and I hope there's a way to get this done and have it covered by insurance.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I would write a letter to your Insurance company and ask for their policy and where it states that it is not covered Also get a letter stating your medical conditions from your doctor and ask for it to be reviewed by their Medical Director (doctor on staff). I know many of the Insurance companies were covering it if you met the criteria. i know where i use to work we pretty much followed Aetna's protocol. I haven't worked their in a year but is it possible the lapband procedure is being considred experimental by the insurance companies? i would keep after them!
