I have never understood why people say they are going to barbecue when they mean cook a hamburger or steak on the grill. Barbecue is a way of seasoning and cooking a boston butt or pork shoulder or ribs, or if you are in Texas, a beef brisket. Grilling a burger is just grilling a burger. :rolleyes::D

Except the true name of the appliance is a BBQ grill. I myself grill not BBQ.

We have a few words that I believe are unique to the Cincinnati area:

"please?" means... pardon?

"3 way".... means... spaghetti, chili, and cheese :D

Us necks have scattered and covered... How we like our hashbrowns while drunk at Waffle House around 3am spread on the grill and covered with cheese. :p

Too funny! I love hearing the servers shouting their tables' orders to the cooks behind the counter at Waffle House.

Maybe from the way the equipment, utensils and condiments used to be advertised? The sauce used to pour over a lot of grilled meats was often called Barbecue Sauce, the grill was almost always advertised as a BBQ Grill as was all the other accessories. I remember growing up seeing most of the main items used in a cook-out called "BBQ _____________". Before long, people just shortened the whole event to a BBQ, no matter how the meat was cooked. And almost all of it was quick-grilled. Being Texas, many truly did BBQ but most didn't but just fast-grilled the meat with BBQ sauce poured over it at some point. Then more BBQ sauce was added at the meal. Kids' faces, arms, hands and upper legs were always stained orange after one of these events! Practically had to hose them down!

I think it is funny that here a Coke is any type of pop or soda. If you order a Coke, the next question is "what kind".

I grew up saying Pardon? I had room mates in college from your area maybe that is what I am remembering?

to me bbq is the sauce or method, if we are going over to someones house we are having a "cook out" if it is just grilling. So I agree with you

In Oklahoma we call it pop. One thing I say a lot is "holler". Like, "if y'all need something, holler" or "When you're ready to go, just holler!" and I'm always 'fixin' to do something. I'm a city girl though and we probably don't have as much of that as rural areas, especially the older folks. Sometimes I scare myself when I hear a hick sound come out of my mouth or some saying! LoL :eek:

"Hollar" in KY means something completely different. You go over the hollar and to the next stop light to get into town. :p I am originallly from Michigan and still have a hard time with this one!!!! (& I am surprised that none of our born and raised southern belles didn't mention this one!!)
