Default bunnies

I hate that people come out of the wood work selling bunnies around Easter time what makes me even sadder is when parents buy them for there kids and they end up at the shelter or listed on craigslist after a week.

And some just dump them from the car at the park or a wooded area. Bunny probably last another 4 hours at best. My mother bought me a baby duck when I was a young child one Easter. Poor little thing didn't last a day. Seems like she never imagined her 3 year old would hide the duck in the sandbox and they don't last long "hiding" under sand for a long time - like during dinner. Back then, they sold them in the stores for Easter presents. My bunny the year before bit me so she didn't want to get another one of those. All the kids I knew always got a puppy for Christmas and then Easter we got little animals of one sort of the other. It was a different time in those days and a ghastly one for little animals.

oohhhh, poor little duckling! That's so sad! I was lucky; no living holiday presents. We had hamsters or gerbils as kids, and kept them for years until they died. I remember having gerbil babies, too. Guess we werent quite the responsible owners!

My father tells me similar stories of Easter chicks and rabbits his friends had as kids. I'm happy that our Tractor Supply stopped selling them a couple of years ago. It's so sad that people view these animals as short-term, disposable toys.

There was a news report on our local station, the large animal shelter in Knoxville Young-Williams Animal Centerwas pleading with consumers not to buy bunnies for Easter gifts. The shelter has lots of bunnies that are surrendered.

poor bunnies and at least it is a no kill shelter

I will admit to buying baby chicks for my boys at Easter years ago. We raised them in the house until big enough to go out with the grown hens. But we live on a farm and they lived out their lives in the hen house with the other chickens and roosters.

I know this makes me so sad as well.

I reemeber when I was little, places used to sell Color Dyed chicks, us girls talked my mom into buying a pink one. Well let me tell you that Chick grew up to be a Rooster. He ran all over the place. My parents finally let a friend who had a farm take the Rooster. He lived many years and had a good home on the farm.

Adopt Other Animals

Your situation is different. Sadly, my "toy" animals were bought for me to play with as pets but no one really supervised me much with them if I buried the duck! The bunny we did keep for well over a year and it got quite large and that next Easter he had a birthday party. He was black and white and I trained him to come to me when I called his name - Peter Rabbit. Original. Everytime the fridge door opened, Peter Rabbit would also come hopping from wherever he was in the house and get a piece of lettuce or carrot or apple chunks we kept in his treat bowl in the fridge. My mom had pictures of him stretching up to get his treat from me with the fridge door open in the background and many other pix. Once when I wouldn't let him go when he wanted down, he bit me quite deeply and my mom made my dad take him off. Daddy and mother had friends in McKinney, Texas who lived on a farm where they got our dairy and eggs sometimes - fresh from the farm and we would drive up there often to stay with them and come back with farm-fresh butter, cream(which my father alone would drink un-pasteurized - yuck!) and eggs. Anyway, we put him in his cage - all crying - and said goodbye; and Daddy drove him to the farm to live. I cried and cried but my dog, a red Pekingese, licked my tears and made it better. I think that kind of taught my parents no more animals for Easter. We all talked about Peter Rabbit and I felt guilty for a long time for causing Peter Rabbit to have to go to the farm because he bit me!

yeah, but those are the type of people that you go buy an Xbox and trade it and take the Yorkie because you know you can love it more than she can! Ya know? Plus you'd get a pretty cheap yorkie! LOL

Speaking of bunnies..... anyone want one? LOL I'm kidding. I do have a bunny though, he's 2 years old and now that the kids are not around much, the poor thing is soooo neglected. I feed him and give him treats, but he never lets me pet him and he never gets any attention. Poor thing! I wish I could find a good home for him where someone would love him and hold him and make him friendlier.

That's true.. it is just really sad how low people can be.

I use to have a bunny- when I was about 17, I had him in my room and no matter how much I cleaned his cage the pee smell would be so strong it started to give me migraines. So I gave him up- I found a really nice lady- she actually fostered them. She had been looking for a Calico like mine was and she was just thrilled to get him. I think she was a breeder too..I'm sure you can find a good home for yours you just have to really look around!
