| Orthodontics.. $$$? Hey, just wondering if anyone has had TMJ orthodontics done recently, I'm in Canada, and well I saw an orthodontist and they quoted me $8400 for treatment and absolutely none of it is covered by my insurance. Just wondering if it's worth it or if they are scamming me. I asked to see an itemized list of what this $8400 is, and she told me $200 for impressions, then $8200 for the braces and appointments :s that really didn't help much. My tooth is causing me a lot of pain, plus my jaw is also causing problems. I'd like to have this fixed, but I'm applying to law school, and that is over half a year's tuition. Thoughts.

| That is a LOT of money. I had/have TMJ problems after having a lot of dental work done years ago. A bite guard helps as does reducing stress. I got quoted some of those numbers myself and just thought . . no way. You said your tooth is bothering you ~ is this a separate problem?

| The tooth hurts cause it crowded and now everytime I bite this tooth gets hit and hurts, but the four front bottom hurt. I also have jaw problems, which they did some surgery on, and are going to operate on the other side, but I guess there are 4 or 5 things wrong with my mouth. I booked another appointment with another orthodontist to see if they give me a different opinion or price. It's three times the cost of my current car, I really want to fix the problem, but have absolutely no cash.

| I too had some TMJ problems years ago. I finally found a dentist that discovered my bite was uneven after having some crown work done. He evened everything up and it was a huge relief. It still pops quite a bit and I have to be careful with it, but I don't have the pain or the locking like I was with the uneven bite. Make sure when you bite down that both sides of your teeth meet at the same time evenly. It could be as simple as that to fix. That seems like a lot of money for treatment. Good luck to you.

| Just make sure you do your research and go to several before you make your choice, having just moved to florida from Boston , my daughter had had her braces on for 2 years, she needed just monthly maintainence appts for 6 more months... I got quotes from orthos ranging from 6000-1800 so its a big variation , I went with the 1800 ortho and got wonderful results.. the ortho that wanted 6000 said he needed to take them off, re do impression, and start over when she only had 6 months left.. SCAM... so do your research!!

| My suggestion would be to contact other orthodontists around your area (or even a couple of towns/cities away) and have them to give you price estimates. Our dental insurance also does not cover a penny of orthodontics (which I personally find to be absurd because you can develop troubling medical conditions if you don't have your teeth worked on), but I found someone in the next town over who will do my consultation for free (they told me via e-mail it would be complimentary and that includes impressions) and they will work with you financially with payment plans thereafter. I have heard that consultations have costed people $200, but some people will offer it for free. Just keep shopping around, and I wish you the best of luck!

| Yes, call around. We don't have many orthodontists here so I called them all so my daughter can get braces. Ranges from $1,800 to $6,000-I can't imagine what one is doing & another one not for there to be that big of a difference.

| Definitely call around. I had braces 3 times and the last time I had them, I remembered it being around 2k. The consulation was free as well. They did excellent work and my mom was able to make monthly payments for it.

| My Invisalign were around $6500, but I needed 26 total aligners, so quite a bit. Plus they are more expensive than regular braces anyways. But yes dental work is sooo expensive. I think my root canal was over $1000 if I remember correctly. And now I am needing ANOTHER one soon. Now Jackson freakin' needs expensive dental work. Don't even know where I'm going to get the $$$ *sigh* My dental insurance sucks too -- it hardly covers anything. I am in collections with the dentist where I have my Invisalign so I have not been able to finish them. Well, I'm not, but my mom is. lol. Got them when I was 16... so she was in control of all the payments. Now I am 21 and only have two aligners to go, sooo close to being done, but haven't completed yet due to cost. Oh I also have some TMJ issues, I think. My jaw cracks very easily and often, but no pain YET. My bite is definitely not aligned properly. So I know I'll need some help with that in the future.

| I haven't been told I have TMJ but my bite is not perfect either. I had a crossbite growing up and braces fixed the majority of it but it's still not exactly where it should be. The orthonodist told me if I wanted it to be perfect, I'd have to get jaw surgery. My sister had jaw surgery when I was 14 and I saw the pain she was in and I was like, "yeah I'll pass on the surgery" haha

| Thanks everyone for the replies, I didn't receive email notifications that people had replied.... I've book and appointment for a free consult. I'm also in a fight with the original company, turns out they took a $200 xray without telling me it wasn't covered. I'm going to tell them where to go on Monday, cause I'm not paying for it. I'm happy to pay the 20% that wouldn't have been covered by my insurance, but not paying the other 80% it's their responsibility to tell me about all costs before they do things.
