| I finally feel like I have a path... I have decided to pursue a degree in Elementary Education. It took a lot of thought but I just know it's something I want to do and I think I will be good at, and more importantly, passionate about. I really enjoy kids. I love to see them learn. I have always been good with young children and have been around them my whole life, besides all my young siblings too (would-have-been 11, 7 1/2, and 3 1/2). I know family is different than other peoples kids, of course. But I have always been told how great I am with kids. I know the work will be tough, and it won't be easy all the time, but I do think it will be a rewarding career and I really know it's the right path for me. I have a few friends who are just now graduating college and becoming teachers and they all have nothing but wonderful things to say about it... I also have a few friends who have been teaching for a few years who also really enjoy their job for the most part. I've talked with all of these people and I'll hopefully get first hand experience soon with some volunteering, etc! I also would not mind moving at all, if need be, to find a good job. I feel like I am at the age where it's possible, don't have anything holding me down! Although MD does seem to have some good teaching opportunities too. I am 42 credits in to an associates degree and will need to take the remainder in the teaching classes they offer, plus my math! And there is a community college over near my dads house that offers Higher Education learning where you can earn your Bachelors through a university's program at this community college which is awesome -- it's cheaper and more convenient this way! You can also earn your Masters as well. Anyways I just had to share my excitement! Because I felt like I've been in a "rut" professionally and school-wise when it came to this past year but I feel like I finally have found my calling and have a path to follow! I am setting up a meeting with my counselor this week to work it all out and be sure I am taking the proper course of action! Wish me luck!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | That's great! My sister was a teacher until she retired a couple years ago. My neice, her daughter became a teacher about 4 years ago and moved from Illinois to Nashville, Tenn for a teaching position there. She loves it. My daughter who is the same age as my niece got her degree in business and has had a difficult time getting a decent job in her field. She says now she wished she had gone in to teaching. Good luck in your journey.

| good job Brit! i think you will be an excellent teacher! i can't wait to hear all about your classes and what you learn and watch you find your first big teaching job. teachers don't get paid nearly enough for the awesome things they do. they are the kid's biggest mentors during that age of school years. you will be a great mentor and teach them wonderful lessons about kindness and life. |

And I still remember ALL of my elementary school teachers, by name and face, lol. I loved most of them! There was one I'd rather forget but yes they are such a huge part of kids life at that age!

| What great news! I know you've been thinking about it, but it's great you have decided I am an elementary teacher (certified K-8), but I have not been able to find a full-time position yet. I have been subbing since December, and it's been great. My end goal is to go into administration and become a vice principal/principal. You will be a great teacher Brit!

| Congrats on your decision! If it makes you feel better, teaching was my 3rd career choice. I changed my major twice before I decided on what I really wanted to do. I wish I could tell you education is easy but it is not. But the rewards of seeing a child "get it" for the first time is a huge payoff. Teaching was in my heart. If your heart is guiding you then you can't go wrong.

Thor's Human Donating Member | That's awesome, congratulations. I must admit that I think in twenty years you'll be a famous animal trainer , but obviously you have a passion for teaching, whether your pupils have two legs or four.

| Congratulations on your decision! It can be so hard when you are feeling "pressured" to make some sort of career decision. I changed majors in undergrad at least 4 times...and then went to grad school for something related, but different. I think you will make an awesome teacher - you've definitely taught Jackson well!

| How wonderful - you go girl! Brit - congratulations on your decision. You have chosen what I believe is one of the most important careers. I worked as a Media Center Parapro for 13 years and even though I've been gone for 4+ years, I rarely go out that some of my old students don't recognize me. Because they are growing up I don't get as many hugs as I used to, but I usually get smiles and hello's. It is so wonderful watching the YT youth grow up and head off into the "real" world. You know, I'm sure, that elementary education is one of the most rewarding and heart breaking profession on the face of earth. Good luck, sweetie -- I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers... |
