I am on Valacyclovir 1GM, one tablet 3 times a day. I also am taking Tramadol for the pain. I wonder if stress alone can cause it. I do lose alot of sleep with Tina and she seems to be getting worse about getting into things and getting hung up in places you would not believe. Sometimes my nerves are so bad I just bawl. We don't want to put her down and she seems to know some things and eating okay and we will just have to have patience with the little stinker. She is about 90yrs. old in people age. I pick her up and hold her and rock her just like a baby and that seems to help settle her down some. Who knows, she may out live me at this point. lol!!

I have been told by a number of MDs that usually a trauma triggers it..surgery, illness etc..and the stress of the event will cause them..especially as we get older..but younger people do get them also...although I should have gotten them in my 30's..I was stressed to the max back then. I have always tried hard to keep my immune system in check...I am a big believer in emtional and mental health to promote good physical health...

I think you've been stressed enough between surgeries and things that it could have weakened your immune system. Just try to rest as much as you can and make sure your blood sugar isn't swinging. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

I had a really bad experience when I had the double knee surgery. Even after I came home from the hospital, it was awhile before I could even write without shaking to pieces. With the infection and thinking I might have to have the surgery all over again was really upsetting to me. I think all of it together and like I said, I know my immune system is low its surprising it didn't happen before now. Just hoping it doesn't spread. The left side of my back feels like someone just kicked the heck out of me.

I'm really glad that you started on the antivirals. I know folks who swear by taking L-Lysine (you can get otc) several times a day while broken out, and also by avoiding certain foods that can trigger or irritate the virus. Check out websites pertaining to shingles/herpes, and they will list such foods. Good luck to you and I hope you are not in pain in the future!

I have had shingles since mid July. I had no idea what this strange rash was never thought shingles and didn't go to the Dr until 2 weeks later. Well I have suffered but not only the pain of the rash but also felt so tired, no energy, and felt sick actually. I think I am now getting over it. The pain of the rash was relieved by crushing two aspirin dissolving in 2 tbsp rubbing alcohol and apply to the lesions. The aspirin relieve the pain and teh rubbing alcohol helped cool down the rash. Sure would not want to go through this again.

Sorry this happened to you after what you have been thru. Agree with the others, get to the Doctor ASAP. It will run its course, but at least you can be more comfortable.

Fourth day of being on the antibotics the doctor put me on and taking pain meds. This crap never quits hurting. Sometimes its like an electrical shock going through you. I wish there was something you could put on it to deaden the pain. It is not as red as it was and hasn't spread but just hurts like crazy.

| It really is terribly painful. Nothing kills the pain....they even put me on Demerol and it did nothing but make me sick. Hopefully it will stop soon. I am sorry you are so uncomfortable.

I'm so sorry that you are suffering so much with this your illness and the stress from Tina I understand what you are going through and I care very much. You are a wonderful mom. It always hurts me to hear of someone being in so much pain, and for you it's coping with pain on top of pain that you normally cope with. I hope that each day you recover more, that your pain eases, and that you have no residual effects from the shingles. You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks Lisa. I appreciate everyone answering and the input on Shingles. I never knew anything about it but am learning more everyday. Don't know if it is contagious or not but I am staying home because I sure do not want to expose anyone to this. Have learned alot just by some of everyones experiences. Thanks again and I hope this stuff doesn't last long.
