| Help for pre-interview I've finally applied to a few different companies because I know I need to leave my current job. Everything is great so far, and I have two interviews set up next week, and a third on the way. I got the email this morning from the third guy, who is based in another city. He wants me to email him back to set up an interview next week with the team in my city, and he also wants me to share what my salary expectations are. That's where I'm stuck. I had an interview with another company before, but I was contacted by a recruiting firm. The guy set up the interviews and everything with no contact from the actual company. He gave me pointers for the interview, and told me if they asked about salary, to avoid giving a range, and just say "My current salary is (whatever) and I would like to stay in that range/would like an increase to switch jobs" My fiance said don't go about it that way and say what I'm making now. He said to give a range. I think if I give a range, they'll automatically just give me the lower end of the range. I don't know how to go about this! I am a little overqualified for the job (I could possibly move up quickly) and I expect maybe a little pay cut, so I thought I'd tell them what I make now, that it is negotiable, but I feel I have enough experience to really justify it. Then they are free to make an offer and might not lowball it like they would if I gave them a range. Any opinions???

| Ugh, the dreaded salary question. I personally would not give a range. Let's say, hypothetically you tell them "I'm looking to make between $30-$35k". You are telling them you will accept the lower end. I think it sounds better if you say "I'm looking to make around $35k." If you give a range and they say "ok, $31k" then you will accept it. But if you tell them you want $35k and they offer $31k, you can just repeat that you really would like to make at least $35k. Is your current job similar to the new opportunity? I wouldn't tell them what you are making now, unless they really lowball the offer.

| My current job is sort of like it, but at my company I'm considered "senior" and I applied for a "junior" position (desperate to leave!). In most other companies, I'd be considered "intermediate" just based on years of experience. That's what I thought about a range too, I don't want to give them the option to give me the lowest possible. It seems silly to give a bottom and top end because who is really going to not want more than that top end? "Okay, I'll take 55,000, but if you offer me 100,000, NO WAY" haha I know that I'm applying for a lower position so I will not make as much as I'm making now, but I can't afford to go a whole lot lower. Changing jobs also means finding someone who will come to our home and express Layla once a day, every weekday. We will have to pay for that (if we can find someone!) We live a half hour out of town (and longer with traffic) so it's not feasible to go home ourselves to do it. I'm worried that if I say a certain number, if it's too high, they will just not even interview me.

| Then how about you be completely honest? I'm sure you have a number in your head that you need to survive. If you say that number and it's too high and they will not interview you, then it probably isn't meant to be. You can't accept an offer that is too low for your means.

| I probably will just have to say the same salary I'm making now. I could afford to go maybe 2k lower, so I think that would be a fair counter offer. And it's not my only option either! So hopefully all three interviews go well and I can choose who I want based on salary and benefits.

| Yes, I hope they all go well! Choices are always good. When are you going to set the interview up for? Now that I think about it, since the salary may be really close to what you are currently getting, maybe you should say "I am currently making $X and need to make at least that...." Sorry

| Okay I just did it! I said what I would like, but that it is negotiable. I also added that I understand it is a junior position and I feel with my experience I can meet more than the minimum requirements for the job.

| I already have an interview for Tuesday morning and Wednesday after work, so I told him I can meet anytime next week, except Tuesday, and mornings would work best but I can be flexible! Tuesday I have a dentist appointment followed by the interview so I can pretend I'm "still at the dentist" lol. If I can get the three of these done at the start of the week, I'll feel better! There is actually one I really really want, and it's not this one. The one I want is doing sort of what I already do, but in a totally different department. I've been doing the same thing for 5 years and I think a change would be nice! It's also in the same building as my fiance (same company, different department, different managers) which would make things very nice becuase we carpool together from out of the city! I'm crossing my fingers, toes, and eyes for that one! (but uncrossing for the interview so I don't look weird)

| It was just a reply to the email so I don't know yet! By the way, I love how these companies are going about things this time. Every one of them has either called my cell phone after work hours, or emailed me during work hours. I have tried this before and I HATE answering calls to set up interviews while I'm at work! I don't have my own office so everyone can hear everything.

| Thank you very much!!!! Scott is urging me to leave this company too, I'm being treated like dirt, but I've been scared to leave for so long! I am kind of feeling empowered now because every resume I've sent out (except one) has resulted in an interview! I'm very excited!
