Default Another Way to Find a Lost Dog

Did you see this on www.freekibble.com this morning?

Did the Scent of Feet Bring a Lost Dog Home?
Human scent trails as a recovery strategy

I recently finished writing a story for Bark's summer issue about best practices for recovering lost dogs, based on the experiences and research of folks at the Missing Pet Partnership (MPP). Among their techniques for locating lost dogs are scent-detection dogs, i.e., using one dog to track down another. What I hadn't heard of was relying on the lost dog's nose to get himself home.

Over the weekend, I read about the curious case of Annika Schlemm and her wirey Terrier, Charlie, who went missing during a walk not far from his home in West Sussex, England. He was on the lam for several days, and was frequently sighted in areas where Schlemm had recently been searching. So her mom suggested she go to the last place he'd been sighted and walk home, barefoot—leaving a scent path for Charlie to follow. It seems to have worked; the errant dog arrived home the following day. We won't know for sure, Charlie isn't talking, but it's an interesting notion.
Relying on a dog's keenest scent makes sense, except for one possible problem. During my lost dog research, I learned that panicked dogs can temporarily lose their sense of smell. "The olfactory portion of the brain will shut down when a dog is stressed," MPP founder Kat Albrecht told me. "They're not thinking of eating. They're protecting themselves. They are full of adrenaline and need to be ready to bolt and run." That may be why some dogs don't always respond to food as bait or, unlike Charlie, have a hard time finding their way home

What a logical step to take !

What better trail to follow, than the scent of it's owner !

Information like this is vital, and SO helpful to one who has
lost his animal. It's a shame that it can't be placed in one
Thread on this Forum, where someone could find it easily.

Default Recovery Find Locate - Stolen Missing Lost

Lou,

I just re-read my post, and it may have sounded like I was chastising
you for not putting your post somewhere else...NOT SO !
I previously have tried to find information on resources for finding a
lost animal on this Forum, and the Search Function just doesn't
cut it.

So, anytime I see any Thread/Post related to that type information
I'm going to start posting this standard "insert" which connects all
the Posts I'm aware of, and add to it, as related information is Posted
here it is !

Thanks for doing that SW - and I'm not the least bit upset.

I actually did look for a better place to post it but
didn't find Jodi's thread.

Silly of me since I knew it was there - just ran out of time for looking.
(Sorry Jodi)

Lou,

Were you aware, that there "was" a place started for such information !

That being at...
General Yorkshire Terrier Discussion - How to find a Lost Dog, or lost Yorkie.
(which had been made Sticky...good idea too)

The problem is, that the Thread has been closed, and any new resources
or procedures as you previously posted, which one might want to add,
can not be entered there.
I don't understand why that (the closure) was done !!

Also, I attempted to look up a post by Jodi as you mentioned, but,
there are quite a few users with that name. IF you would like, I
would be glad to help in that search, if I had more exact information
about the User name. (HA, there's about fifty Users that start with Jodi)

I really think that this topic should be separated out into it's own Category.
Where there could be a sticky Resource Thread, and where people who
had their animal lost or stolen, could post an ongoing dialog for that event.

I believe the Jodi referred to is megansmomma, who's thread is linked above.

Admin and mods can edit the closed threads or stickies as new valuable info become available, and move to different locations when applicable. Some topics are in the YT Library, others are at the top of applicable sections of the forum. I'm always finding new stuff on YT, that has been there forever, but I hadn't noticed.

MGirl,

Thanks for the information.

What you said is SO right, that information is ALL over the place !

When someone looses an animal, the last thing they should be put
through, is an intensive search on how and what to do, and furnished
with an immediate and convenient "location" to announce it.

There are any number of threads created on this Forum, which I may
overlook, because of the "Choice of the Title Statement". Regardless
of what one may write in that box, it would be at least very helpful, if it
were placed in an area FOR that subject material.

We so often forget, how desperate and helpless those people feel.

The Admin and Mods are good about consolidating info about important topics, but only have so much time to devote to this. I'm sure they welcome input that makes information available to those who need it.

Wouldn't it be nice to get a comprehensive instruction manual when we get a new pup? It should include everything about health, training, emergency prep (including lost dog). Breeders and vets should be passing these out.

I'm sorry, I was referring to megansmomma.
I will pm admin and attach this thread to see if there is any interest.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Great information! Worth a try! Not every dog is probably panicked when lost and will pick up the scent and make it home.

I really think that this topic should be separated out into it's own Category. Where there could be a sticky Resource Thread, and where people who had their animal lost or stolen, could post an ongoing dialog for that event.
The reason the reference threads are closed is so that members make us aware via PM if something new should be added. If it was open, and members replied over and over - what's meant to be a reference thread will then become 20 pages - and this is not conducive to people when they need only pertinent information.

If we separated each topic into it's own category - we'd have a thousand categories. That's why we don't do this, and instead have the Library (and also why we do the most important resource threads not only in the library - but they are *also* stickies; that said, we can't make everything a sticky).

As for people who have lost a pet as you mentioned, they should start an individual thread in the General section where it would get the most attention.

Important reference threads are in one place - the Library. And like I mentioned, we then also sticky some threads in the correlating section.

I would have to disagree that people here forget about how desperate people are when they have any sort of emergency. I see the contrary .

To LOU: thanks so much for this info, it's so helpful! I never would've thought of using scent in this way.

I wanted to add to my reply from last night....which I felt was kind of abrupt, and I didn't mean it to be; I had a terrible headache at the time (and still do...sigh).

I wanted to add that suggestions to make things better or more easy to use are always appreciated . There may be reasons we don't use all of the suggestions, but we do incorporate as much as we can if it works to make things even better for all of us.

If anyone sees a Library thread (or reference thread in a section) and you feel more info could be added that would make it even better -- the best thing to do is contact the author of the thread and run your suggestions by them...see what they think, and they may want to add it via their own words. If the thread's author doesn't reply to you, then PM me directly and we could work together on it, without stepping on the author's toes. We can add edits to threads that are closed, so that's not a problem.

Many people have added so much to the reference threads/Library - and I still go back to them all the time.

Wylie's Mom,

I didn't think that your replay was abrupt, but, quite informative
as usual.

Hope you're feeling better today.
