Ha ha! Well I wasn't about to post until I verified with others. Order of operations is very easy to make mistakes. I do it with my students every year. I post a problem and will end up with at least 4 different answers. I kept thinking it was 288 but wanted to ask around before I posted! ![]()

| ![]() Well by doing math how I was taught I came up with 288 as well. Parentheses comes first. Division and multiplication are equal there is no set order for them. So after the parentheses you go left to right to solve it. Interesting, I will have to get out my old math book to see which is right. I could ask my brother who has a degree in accounting and is a Math teacher.

| ![]() Thanks, I thought I did it right. It's only been 2 years since I've been out of college and took math courses. I didn't think I was that rusty.

| ![]() It is 288. When people do PEMDAS, they forget that MD and then AS are done left to right.

Parenthesis first, next exponents, multiplication or division (solve left to right), then addition or subtraction (also left to right). MD multiplication or division, whichever comes first AS addition or subtraction, again left to right | |

| ![]() 2 bc you have to get rid of the parentheses before you do the left to right ops. 48/2(9+3) 48/2(12) 48/24 2 ![]()

| ![]() Okay, if M and D are equal, then it makes sense why it would be done left to right , but: 48/2(9+3) 48/2(12) We still haven't gotten rid of the parentheses. So we can just pull 12 out and make it read 48/2x12 and ignore that the 12 is still in the ()?

| ![]() Ah by why did you multiply the 2x12 first? After the parentheses in this equation you work left to right. The parentheses around the 12 just means multiply that is the only reason it is still there, to tell you to multiply. Technically you got rid of the parentheses by adding the 9+3. So the equation technically looks like this: 48/2x12. Working from left to right you divide before you multiply hence coming up with 288.
