When discussing today how to discuss life in Tallahassee for the new PhD recruits here's the comment I got: "Well Rose can represent the angry South American women that live here."

First, sorry you are feeling that the guys in class don't treat you with respect. You mentioned not being invited...why would you want to?

Maybe they it's their way of "showing" you that they DO respect you, with a little teasing

You mentioned your age and theirs...if you plan on working in a man's environment, you'll learn it could be much worse than a little teasing...

I wonder why they think you are angry? See.. when you are hurt and quite they think you are angry? hmmm they need to take a class on personal comunication!!

Sorry, but it's offensive to depict me as an angry South American woman, when I'm not even from South America. My family is from Cuba and I was born here. Cuba is not in South America. That is an ignorant comment to make.

I did, it kind of worked because he tried to retrace what he said and justify himself.

Just like with dogs, repetition is key.

Have you heard this Aesop's fable?

The North Wind and The Sun.

The North Wind boasted of great strength. The Sun argued that there was great power in gentleness.

"We shall have a contest," said the Sun.

Far below, a man traveled a winding road. He was wearing a warm winter coat.

I think it was a combination of my silence, and a bystander not involved suggesting that he apologize. Rather than apologizing directly, he tried to justify his actions. But yes, I think the winning strategy is to simply not say anything at all.

Yeah, until then hopefully I'll keep trying to thicken up my skin
