| Refinishing old bureaus... help, tips, suggestions! I am redoing our bedroom minimally this week coming up. Got new bedding, curtains and am going to repaint the walls. I want new furniture but that won't happen for awhile so I was going to take the old set we have now and refinish it to give it a more updated look. My new bedding is black, white and grey, the walls will be light grey with reddish accents and I want to paint the furniture black. I bought all new brushed nickel hardware to replace the old bureau hardware. The furniture is wood stained and slightly beat up looking. From what I can gather I need to rough it up with sandpaper, prime it with a latex/acrylic primer and then paint it. Can I spray paint it? Also should I shallac it afterwards to get it shiney again? I thought spray paint would work better to get into the grooves, corners and niches. Anyone ever do this before? Can you offer me some advice, suggestions or tips!? Thanks!!

| It sounds really nice. Spray paint might work better than brushing so that you won't see brush strokes. After you sand the furniture, make sure you get all the little pieces off so that it doesn't show when you paint it. Good luck!! |

| I was not going to sand the furniture too much, just rough it up, prime it with 2 coats and then paint it. I guess I can paint it with furniture paint that is glossy so I don't need Shellac or polyurethane or anything. I have a side table that I can play with a little bit too. Its a good one too because the finish on the top of it is damaged worse than any of the other pieces I have.

| The glossy paint is a good idea so that you don't have to shellac or polyurethane it. Have fun!! |

| I grew up around antiques and learned to refinish and restore them in my teens by my Grandpa who had an antique shop so I have a hard time painting wood! lol! What kind of wood is your furniture made of? Could you strip and refinish it in another stain rather than paint? Just a thought... |

| You could strip the paint but that is time consuming and unless the furniture was really worth it, I'd do exactly as you are. I would sand it quick and wipe it down with a damp microfiber cloth (lint free) to get all the dust off. Then I'd use Kilz primer (oil based not latex based) so I did not have to sand all the paint off which usually will take off some of the furniture detailing. I would spray paint it, but that is because I have good spray paint technique. If I did not have good technique, I'd use a brush and I would not use a cheap brush. I would buy satin paint and do two coats. When dry I would use a semi-gloss or a satin polyurethane depending on how much shine I wanted. I'd probably actually use the least shine but that is a matter of preference. Use a foam brush to apply the poly. Good luck - I've done many pieces this way and they come out beautiful. The nickel hardware sounds cute on black, or you can opt for a crystal knob and that will look fabulous too.

| ooohhh I didn't even think of Crystal knobs... that would look FABULOUS I think!!! Great idea! I bought Nickel knobs... I might use them from now and maybe change them out later in time to Crystal knobs. Thanks for the advice! I do want a high gloss finish on them, thanks for the brush suggestions too, I had no idea! Wow, this is a BIG project. I just wanted to slap a coat of black paint on them! hahaha Guess not huh?
