Question Refinishing old bureaus... help, tips, suggestions!

I am redoing our bedroom minimally this week coming up. Got new bedding, curtains and am going to repaint the walls. I want new furniture but that won't happen for awhile so I was going to take the old set we have now and refinish it to give it a more updated look. My new bedding is black, white and grey, the walls will be light grey with reddish accents and I want to paint the furniture black. I bought all new brushed nickel hardware to replace the old bureau hardware. The furniture is wood stained and slightly beat up looking.

From what I can gather I need to rough it up with sandpaper, prime it with a latex/acrylic primer and then paint it. Can I spray paint it? Also should I shallac it afterwards to get it shiney again? I thought spray paint would work better to get into the grooves, corners and niches.

Anyone ever do this before? Can you offer me some advice, suggestions or tips!?

Thanks!!
