And that is my barbecue, minus the snow. |

I slow cooked a pork tenderloin last night and it was quite possibly one of the best things I've ever grilled. I had thought about sending the second half to my in-law's but I think I'll keep it for myself. Even reheated for lunch it was still as tender as it was last night. |
Seeing those ribs makes me know what I am gonna be cooking this weekend! |

Yeah, I actually ended up eating all the rest of the short ribs too a night later and there was a ton left over! Ha. Pork tenderloin, eh? Sounds grubbin'! I've usually kept it simple on the BBQ, chicken, short ribs, some steak, hot dogs and bratwurst, corn, and fish a few times. Funny I've never cooked a burger on it. |

WOW! Find the guy that can do all that ... and I'll marry him. Sight unseen.:p I'd only add one thing that I'm surprised wasn't on the list -- kiss. There's almost nothing worse than a lousy kisser. And there are plenty of 'em out there. |

So I took another crack at pork ribs after all the encouragement and tips here. Results were better -- I didn't burn them -- but I'm not quite there yet. Here's what I did. Tell me if you can spot any obvious goofs: * On the advice of a friend, I boil 'em first in a mixture that includes a good dark beer and onions for maybe 20 minutes. The idea, he says, is it cuts down on the cooking time. * I coated in yellow mustard and put on a rub recommended online. * I cooked on indirect heat (below 300 the whole time) until inner temperature reached 180 degrees. It was cold out, so it took an hour and a half. * About halfway through I started brushing on BBQ sauce. The result was good but not expecially tender. Maybe I should dump the boiling step? |
I've never boiled anything before BBQing.... ;) I'm trying to remember the last time I did ribs, it's been a while, but I think I did 300-350 degrees the whole time. I don't recall cooking it for more than an hour. More important in my preparation was to marinate it early, and let it really soak in. BBQ sauce I try to brush on sporadically as well. Well, there ya go, look at #1... ;) How to make great BBQ ribs. Easy tips and tricks for outstanding BBQ! Ah, I suspected as much. Great, now all the boys will tease me for boiling them first! I think I might have done two things wrong after checking that first site. Boiling is 1. But it was so cold outside that my temperature kept dropping. I should have cooked a little hotter or not opened the lid as much. Oh, and I skipped the marinade step. I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the tips. I hope there's not a quiz. I just ate the last of them for dinner. Mmmm. |
If you can, try to marinade for at least 24 hours prior to BBQ them. I have always gotten my best ribs that way. As far as that list goes, I can do a lot of that stuff, but not enough of it really matters! I can even iron my own shirts if I HAVE to. The dryer works especially well to get wrinkles out! |

I usually try to keep the grill heated to 325 degrees and cook them off to the side of the fire. It takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size and amount of ribs I cook. |
AY: Yup, you do have to take into account your surroundings too. I don't think most BBQers will be BBQing in 40-50 degree weather... You should get some serious MAN POINTS for that! :) |

Fasteddie - Thanks for those links. They just may give me the courage to try ribs for the first time. Thanks for those pictures you guys posted. I think you may have stirred something deeply ancestral. (insert coyote howl here) Alaskayorkie gets Man Points just for living in Alaska and Caveman Points for barbecuing there! A man has got to have big bolas in Alaska or else his gender is confused due to cold 'bundling'! I fear mine would disappear. |

How about a few additions?.... 76. Learn to sail a boat. (I can) 77. Clean up after your pet. (I can't handle it) 78. Change a baby's diaper. (I don't know how/can't handle it) Seriously, is this the author's attempt at justifying himself as a man? |

1 Attachment(s) Check it out, boys. I learned how to BBQ on YT. I marinaded these babies overnight, then used a rub before cooking them at 300 degrees. It was cool again, 50 degrees or lower, so it took 2 hours to reach a 180-degree meat temperature. The result was my best effort yet. Tender, nice flavor. My wife thought the rub tasted a little salty. So I shot her. Ha ha. Kidding. Bad joke, I know. I'm gonna look around for a better rub. |

What have I missed? I only read the first couple of pages when there was only 3 guys in the thread and the women were harassing them ;) In any event, here are my hobbies. Most of them will be considered "manly" I hope hehe 1) Computers - Obviously, since I'm a programmer, computers are a big part of my life. Along with that has been computer gaming. I used to do a lot more gaming on the PC until I got my Xbox. However, I still play some games like Command & Conquer 3 (RTS games suck on Xbox), Tomb Raider, and my wife and I play Sims 2. I also have a Lan party with my wife, sister, and her boyfriend and we play Age of Empires 2. I also miss playing road rash. :) I absolutely LOVED the first Red Alert, and can't wait for 3 to come out! 2) Consoles - My first console ever was a Sega Genesis (my parents were brainwashed and thought the Nintendo would ruin the TV) and then I waited until the Xbox to get back into consoles. I now have an Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii. I love Splinter Cell (been waiting for Conviction forever it seems) as well as Halo (have all 3) and Forza 2 with the Xbox racing wheel (one of the awesomest experiences I've ever had with a gaming console with the wheel's force feedback). Oh, and GRAW. :) On the Wii we've downloaded some classics like Super Mario Bros 1 & 3, Punchout, and Zelda. For actual Wii games we have Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda Twilight Princess, and we just bought Super Smash Bros (although I believe that game is way over-hyped.) 3) Hockey - It's the only sport I can watch without falling asleep. I'm a Detroit Red Wings fan, so I'm a happy camper right now with them up 3-0 in their series with Dallas. I like to play hockey video games and love to play street hockey, but all my high school friends I used to play with moved away and I have nobody left to play with :( However, I do like to play golf and bowl, and I'm taking a beginning tennis class with my wife and we are enjoying that. 4) TV - When my wife graduated and got a job, I rewarded myself for paying her tuition with a plasma HDTV. :D My wife and I love: 24, Lost, CSI, Smallville, & The 4400 (before it was canceled). One aspect you could call me girly about is that I don't like beer that much. However, I will down a margarita any day of the week. :) Though this may make me seem girly, trust me, I'm not. I often threaten anyone at the table that I even think will make fun of me when I order one. :p However, I have no problem with some Jack & Coke or a Long Island, so I go for balance. Oh, and I saw something about hot chicks. The one I would like is Jennifer Love. My wife knows it and said if I had a chance, I could take it. It's my "free pass." She better hope Jennifer Love doesn't start making movies in Louisiana :) |
