| what about the other animals that are sold in petstores? I've been really thinking about Petstores lately.....& I've noticed that everyone has been only worried about the puppies that are sold through petshops. But what about the kittens?...the rabbits, the Guinea pigs, the hamsters & ferrets?? I'm pretty sure they come from mills or mass breeding industries too? I understand that there's more of a demand on dogs than other animals...but does that mean that we totally forget about the others & put their abuse & neglect on the back burner?? I mean, are kittens & Guinea pigs more disposable than puppies?? This has really been bothering me because I have YET seen any type of interest in these animals, no one has mentioned it or anything! Yes these petstores & puppymills are terrible & NEED to be shut down immediately!.....but where are these kittens & other animals coming from?...don't you feel that they need to be shut down too? Excuse my long rant, but I am more than a dog lover I'm an ANIMAL LOVER & this really concerns me... |

| You're right. I think puppy mills have gotten more of a name that a "kitten mill" or a "bunny mill," but I bet you a million dollars they exist too. I've seen videos of sting operations where they show a guy "neutering" a bunny. The poor thing was half anesthetized, and probably anesthetized in the wrong way. (bunnies are really special when it comes to anesthesia) The bunny was kicking midway through the "neuter." Not only was the man doing the neuter not an experienced vet, but he also used Clorox wipes to clean the wound. I've spoken of that too on YT before. I believe if we get any kind of awareness out there, people will start to have a conscience about it. They'll start asking questions about all the other pets in the pet store just like you have.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I could not agree with you more, and I love your post. I feel the same way. I actually can't even tolerate the fish in pet stores, it upsets me. Especially upsetting to me are the Beta fish who are kept in about a 4-oz cup -- it literally makes my stomach turn. And of course, all of the other creatures for sale upset me...no matter how big or small. It just makes me so crushingly sad. Even the way they store the feed-crickets bothers the heck out of me. ALL creatures deserve some kind of respect and reverence, in my opinion -- and it's just not given so much of the time. If I happen to go to Petsmart for something, I actually can't even look at the caged creatures most of the time...bc it's just too much and I feel so helpless.

| @DvlshAngel....oh god! That is terrible. When I read your post I pictured a disturbing image from those torture horror movies & instead of humans it was that poor rabbit. & I totally agree with you if people were to mention this more often then others will start to question too. I personally didn't really think about it until I was looking at my cat & I wondered if there were such things as a kittymill. @ Wylie'sMom....YES! I know exactly what you're talking about. I understand that you can't put 2 beta's in the same tank because they'll fight...but that doesn't mean that they have to put them in lil dixie cups! & then when they have them on CLEARENCE sale that just sends me over the edge! The Petland Discounts around my area store their crickets & white mice the same.....in one glass tank piled & stacked up on top of each other. Its sickning! |

| There have been discussions on YT about this before - just not nearly as often as puppies. Hopefully when people are convinced that they shouldn't buy dogs from petstores, they will also realize that they are supporting the same industry when buying other animals. I rarely see cats in petstores (unless they are rescues), so it isn't something I think about. There are bunny mills and such though which is very sad. And there is tons and tons of information and discussions about factory farming here and all over the internet. A lot of people are quick to ignore it, reason it away, or whatever though.

| I don't think anyone should support a pet store that sells a living creature, no matter what it is.

Its like we're always told not to buy PUPPIES from there. Never have I heard anyone say "don't buy hamsters from there...they're probably not healthy"...."don't buy those fishes....do you see how they have them in those little bowls?!?" You know when I was 9 maybe 10 I saved up all my birthday money to buy this baby rabbit from a petshop. She was beautiful, black and white with these gorgeous greyish-blue eyes. I called her Oreo and she was my LIFE! I got in trouble one day & my punishment was for my rabbit to stay at my aunts house (because my mom KNEW that would drive me insane) a few days later my beloved Oreo passed away only a few months old. My aunt took her to the Vet to see the cause of death & they told her that Oreo went into cardiac arrest. I cried for WEEKS! As young as I was I couldn't understand how a baby rabbit can have a heart attack. So I blamed my aunt for years (even though she takes great care of her own pets.) But it wasn't until TODAY that I actually put the pieces together, I bought a sick rabbit!! Poor Oreo came from a mill. Oreo was probably so poorly bred that she didn't stand a chance! Aww man, I still miss her to this day. | |

| I dont worry so much about the mammals as i do the reptiles. iguanas are a perfect example they need very special diets and they need a white light 8 hours of the day and a red light at night. they need to be able to get up to the light but not close enough to burn themselves they need a gallon of tank for every inch of iguana. most pet store iguana setups any wear between twelve and fifteen 4 inch baby iguanas in a ten gallon tank they are fed lettuce (terrible for them because it like candy it has no nutritional benefits at all) some times they even give them crickets (iguanas are strict vegetarians) the turn on a hot light during store hours and turn it off at night so no heat to digest there food.normally there is one stick in the tank and it dose not reach high enough for them to get warm so again they cannot digest the food they eat it sits in there bellies and rots. they are taken from the wild as hatchlings(like almost all reptiles you see in the pet stores) and are thrown 20-40 in a cloth sack where they are then thrown in a shipping box with maybe 2 other sacks and they then get to a big sorting building wear they are sorted any iguana who has been injured during transport is "euthanized" this includes the defense of dropping there tails a drop tail will grow back but it takes time time in witch these reptiles are growing. they can get to be 6 foot long and if not fed properly they can break bones just by standing or laying on them when they send you home with one they tell you if you keep it in a ten gallon it wont grow this is not true they do grow they just get sick because they can move okay i'm done sorry for the rant

our iguana come from a fair they wear giving it away as a top prize, the poor thing only lasted two years before we had to have the vet euthanize him his bones wear irreversibly weak from lack of calcium as a baby and he had a problem wear his digestive organs would fall out we struggled with treatment for a year. its become my pet store hobby "no such thing as teacups" and "do you know how much work a iguana takes"

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | My dad had a pair of iguanas years ago. They grew like weeds, and he finally gave them away to a friend when I threatened to move out because they stank to high heaven. There are some animals that just shouldn't be pets, IMHO. I agree with you all - I don't like to see any animals being sold in a pet store. What really gets me are the fish at Walmart, though. |
