Animal Smiley 036 Papillons! <333

I think I've fallen in love with the breed. Even though I've only met one in person, hahaha. I've fallen thru the internet.

I've been looking into my 2nd dog options, even though it probably won't be for another 6 months-1 year before acquiring a new dog. Of course I browse petfinder almost every day.

I originally was looking into Silky Terriers (and still am) because I tend to think that's what Jackson is and even if he's not, I've really just fallen in love with the breed and been in contact with reputable breeders.

But if it's not another Silky or Yorkie, I think it's definitely going to be a Papillon! Perfect for me. They're like a mini Border Collie energy-wise. They are extremely intelligent (#9 right behind Poodles, GSD's, etc) and love to do tricks (perfect for me!) and are amazing agility dogs. Apparantly not too barky, which would be incredibly nice, and very driven!

I am just loving what I'm seeing. I like the tri-color ones the best. And they range from pretty tiny (4-5lbs) and up to sometimes 12-15lbs, there is no weight standard, just height, etc.

Anyone have experience with them? I love love love Jackson's activeness and energy level. Sometimes it can get annoying (ha!) but that's what I love so much about him, so I think a Pap would fit great with him.

Here's my "perfect" Papillon <3:

I think they are gorgeous also - it was between a yorkie and a papillon when I was looking for a fur-baby - and the tri-colored are my favorite. My ex-mother-in-law had one and it was extremely vocal and pretty distructive - but that could have all been in what she was doing - or not doing to correct the issues (typical puppy behavior with an older owner) - just like any fur-baby - it was probably bored. I have no person experience with them - I just think they are one of the cutest breeds out there.

Oh, that baby is truely gorgeous! I don't have personal experience with this breeder, but what I have heard is they are wonderful. Your 2nd will definitely need to be active to keep up with Jackson. He's a trememdous little fella. Good Luck in your search, looking forward to pics when the additon arrives, LOL. They will be two lucky babies to have you!

I went to a dog show recently and had the opportunity to see the Papillons preparing and then working the ring. They are beautiful and appeared to work very well with their handlers.

I have a neighbor, an older woman, who was looking for a Yorkie when a Papillon entered her life. The dog is energetic, very affectionate, and obedient.

I believe they are very good at learning tricks.

I love the Papillon basically cause i love saying the word "Papillon" in a fake french accent LoL They are very cute dogs. Theres a woman near my uncle's house who has 3 of them. Hers are kinda "barky" lol So i think its basically like the yorkie..you can end up with one that does or one that doesnt.

My neighbor used to have one and she was *extremly* destructive. However, I have no idea how she was raised and I am sure that has everything to do with their behavior. I think they are adorable. I love the ears!

How much maintenance do they require? I mean coats, are they always kept long?

Yes, their minds need to be kept super BUSY or they will get destructive and find other ways to occupy their mind. They're literally like having a Border Collie. The smarter the dog, the more you have to do with them pretty much, LOL. I belong to another forum where a few people have them and they get 2+ hours of exercise per day in order to be chill around the house. Maybe I'm weird, but I like the driven dogs like that though. It definitely appeals to me, since I'm capable of giving a dog loads of exercise.

Their coats are low maintenance, pretty much. It's not like a Yorkie who needs to go to the groomers so often. I think you just need to brush out a few times a week. They do shed and are considered average-medium shedders, which is something I'd have to get used to!

Yup, they are known for pretty much everything. Ha! This page explains it pretty well:
Braylor's Papillons: Versatility

I saw them on TV in a dog show and just loved their little strut. They're people-pleasing dogs.

Ha! I love saying it, too. Hilarious. When I first saw it online last year, I didn't know how to pronounce the word, hahah.

I love Papillons! I think they are adorable, but don't know much about the breed. I've only known one in real life, but she is a total sweetheart.

I got my Papillon, Spicy, 6 months ago at 10 years old and blind with cataract. We had her operated on and now she can see perfectly.
Spicy is only 5 pounds which is really small for this breed. Normally they range from 10 to 15 pounds.
Spicy isn't a yapper at all, but she will definately let me know if someone or something is near the house. I can't believe how well she hears. She isn't a high energy girl either. In her earlier years she loved to play ball and such, but not now.
If you don't mind the shedding, then they would be a wonderful addition to any family. They shed like crazy. I use a slicker on Spicy twice a day and vacuum every other day. She gets a teaspoon of Shed-Relief every day that cut her shedding in half since I got her, and I don't bathe her but every couple of months since their coat tends to be on the dry side. Here are some pictures of my little girl:

My nephew has a Papillon, Nemo, and he is adorable & smart. Only thing I dislike about him is the shedding . . .

Spicy is adorable! And so tiny, aw! Where did you rescue her from? I'm so happy her eye sight is back. That is totally amazing what they can do these days.

I don't really know anything about the breed but I have a neighbor with 2 and they are the noisiest little boogers. They are constantly barking. I seen others that are a little bit barky as well.

Having said that, Hot Rod's and Maggie's trainer had one and he was very quiet and obedient.

They are cute but shedding could be a deal-breaker for me. Of course, my Westie sheds like crazy too!
